Default Why the aquatic names?

Does anyone know why or at least has a fairly interesting speculation on why the Tau vehicles and aircraft are named after sea creatures? Maybe it's to do with the sleek lines of the hull style (and the obvious Hammerhead shape), or even for fans of the Boron race from the 'X2: the Threat' series of space combat-trader games. (which would be a shame, as I found those Boron annoying). And since I've mentioned X2 and spaceship-stealing; how many lawyers did the developers have to hire to make the human battleships look exactly the same as the ones from Starship Troopers? ^-^

Kinda makes you wonder what the Tau really call them, as the 'fish' names are just what the Ordo Xenos gives them.

*edit: Wait, maybe 'X2: the Threat' came out after GW made the Tau. Oh well...who cares? It's probably just a coincidence anyway.

No, the Tau call them by a sea creatures' name (the Inquisition just roughly translate it to Imperial) and it's because... err... can't remember... but there is a reason :P.

Well I thought that it was kinda like how the US Air Force/Military Intelligence named Japanese planes 'Zeke' etc in WW2. Or when the Tau themselves refer to the tanks as 'Hammerheads', it's just GW putting the name to the way the hull looks like a hammerhead's head; instead of giving it a 'real' Tau name, as otherwise the tanks would have a Tau name that people won't understand unless they looked into the fluff. As of course, Hammerhead sharks are a Terra thing.

And in Imperial Armor Vol 3, it does say "Codename: Hammerhead" in an Ordo Xenos report.

Even if it is just a codename made up by the Imperium, I still show my Tau calling them 'Hammerheads', 'Paranias' etc in my fanfiction; as otherwise it would just look weird and un-tabletop-ish if I called them by anything else.

But that's not to say that all the names are Imperium-made; as it's believable that the XV8 Crisis could still be 100% Tau, but just translated like MalusHunter said. Or the Tau might also happen to have a hammerhead-like creature on their home planet, and 'Hammerhead' is a translation.

Because Tau designation uses aquatic names for the tanks, which are translated into a roughly terran analogy.

Its probably not a earth Hammerhead, but a Tau sea shark roughly analogous.

X2 - Rocked, so hard. X3, even more so They did change the titans though in X3. And you could mod the Roger Young (as well as just about every other sci-fi ship ever) in to it.

I had a BC304 Daedalus from stargate, as well as the Battlestar Galactica.

And that infuriating Boron you had to transport > "Pilot, is there any reason you are going so slow"

Damn I wanted to kick his ass out the airlock without a suit.

Lovely ships and sectors though - Kingdom's End was the purdiest sector in the whole game

It begs the question, do the Tau have a vehicle called the "Anchovy" or the "Tuna"?

If so, what does it look like? o.O?

Anchovies would be the designation for mobile hot-drop SMS platforms (Similar to the air-droppable box-silo they showed on the military channel)

Just rip the top, and rain salty d3ath. :P

If you read the Project Tau article you would see that Akula is the Tau word for Tank... Imperials give the fish names to Tau vehicles, dunno why- but Tau have their own designations.

Oh, I'd love to see the look of mortal terror on my opponent's face when I bring out a Forgeworld Scampi to the table. ;D

You know that Akula is the Russian word for 'Shark' right? It is also a class of Russian submarines as well.

which is a derivative of the english word 'killer.' It doesn't matter- 40k takes words from other languages and mixes it up all the time- Mon'keigh? Come on.

Fact of the matter remains it doesn't instantly sound 'fish' which in my opinion makes it valid. Pirhana, Hammerhead, Devilfish- all of these are Imperial designations.
