Are Etherals any good? Anyone opinion is welcome

Depends really, if you have a large static fire base, then they can be slightly useful in holding it together. The added bonus of IC and being behind, or in between, the squads means he's only really gonna die in CC.

So in my opinion, their not worth it really, I play Mech and there's nowhere I can put one safely.

They are an obvious target, and every opponent will know this. So the best role for them is probably as bait. The leadership ability of the Ethereals is nowhere near as impressive as Synapse or Rites of Battle, and they aren't good in close combat, they have little protection or durability, and they have no ranged attack. They also take up your second HQ slot, which is almost inevitably better filled by a second commander. Personally, I think GW screwed them up pretty badly with them in the last edition.

They are best in a static list, where they can maintain LOS to Tau infantry units easily without exposing themselves to too much fire. I have used one with reasonable success along with a full unit of Honor Guard. This keeps the Ethereal from being singled out by ranged attack or in close combat (since he isn't an IC if you take the Honor Guard). Their ability to reroll successful morale checks also makes them invalueable if you want to retreat from a combat and strand a close-combat unit in the open.

I think Ethereals are quite useful in that they can excessively lure enemies into their position, as you opponent would likely feel the need to kill it if it was in any way isolated.

3rd editon-cheap HQ options
4th edition-waste of points that could make your army run off the table.
especially since you already have to buy another HQ.

I like to use one in higher-point games, but I always get nervous when my opponents eyes light up as I put an ethereal on the field! It's worth the risk, usually, as I have had broadsides retreat clear off the board from the loss of a single shield drone. Things like that seem to happen way more often than they should.

Hmmm good question, Stan.
I would say the Ethereals have a BS in case you would like to equip them with a ranged weapon.
Although I'm not quite sure if they even have a ranged weapon choice.

They don't. But GW likes to distinguish between models that would never be able to make a ranged attack, and those that don't simply because they don't have a ranged weapon. It makes it easier for non-standard scenarios and special rules.

I really do think that Ethereals should have more wargear options available to them. Just looking at the Codex, there's artwork in there that shows them wearing both armour (on the front cover) and a jetpack (I forget which page).
