Default FoF: Ethereal Body Guard

I'm trying to figure out how I want to make my army list for an 1850 battle board that the local shop I play at has. And I know I want to set up my Troops using the FoF tactics. But I was thinking: Take an Ethereal with Body Guard. The only problem I see with this is that you loose the Inspiring Presence rule and that you can't take a full 12 man squad. But I was planning on taking the Ethereal, a Shield Drone and a 10 man squad. Any thoughts on this plan?

Are you wanting the bodyguard for the increased BS?
Cause if you are then just use Markerlights, Costs less and you don't have an ethereal within 12 of an enemy unit.
If you are doing it for fluff reasons then go right ahead. Would be nice to see the ethereal caste get stuck in and do some dity work for a change.

Yea, not getting him close is nice, but the Markerlight also has a chance of missing. This way, they automatically get that bonous and Markerlights could be used else where. Like for Broadsides or Seeker Missiles.

Then again, it can be handy for an ethereal to be killed.

Having the preferred enemy rule is a nasty surprise to opponents.

I know my friends sometimes like to avoid killing my ethereal, depending on the situation. The price can quickly climb to high to make it worth it for them. Its just a matter of situation.

I know its not very Tau-like to sacrifice an ethereal, but Sometimes it is neccessary for the greater good

thats what i do, i've only got 1 team of pathfinders so i need them to markerlight for major targets. the increased bs means one unit less i have to markerlight, also it keeps my ethereal alive. i would say that if your playing tournament or something, its probably pretty useless, but if your just feilding the ethereal for fun, go ahead!

I suppose the etherial allows you to also field an extra Firewarrior squad is you need them and have your troop selection filled up.

you might want to consider that is 380 points you are offering up to the enemy if he
a.downs the fish when it is moving over 6", or
b. returns fire killing the FW and etherial standing in the open after a FoF move, and for good measure shoots the fish down as an afterthought, or
c. gets some swooping hawks, assault marines, bikrboyz, rough riders, etc. into close combat and kills them all off and again shoots down the fish for good measure.

As a bonus, every unit, not in transport or a vehicle, now takes a morale test...

yeah I think anyone playing against this would use his entire army to gain such an advantage.

Hey, check this one out: http://forums.tauonline.org/index.php?topic=63299.0

I think as Tau's most famous tactic, the FoF has attracted some misconceptions regarding it.

The proper FoF is meant to allow 2 squads of FWs to rapid fire single, slow, footslogging units to death while avoiding a return assault. FoF is a high-risk move because skimmers do not block return shooting and its said targets are usually not isolated to prevent this from happening. Firewarriors doing FoF should be expected to take a fair deal of return fire, if not from the target, then from the target's supporting units.

Given the bullet-sponge-like nature of FoF Firewarriors, it would not be worth the risk to use an Ethereal+honor guard squad for this purpose. Also, given the mass number of shots generated, the BS3 of regular Firewarriors should be more than adequate most of the time. In the case that more accuracy is needed, the wisest route is to use markerlights.

Though it might be a bit blunt, I hope this helps.

Agreeing with Floobosaurus. Attaching a devilfish to an honor guard would be ok, but not if you attempt Fish of Fury with them. You will expose the ethereal to excessive firepower, and you will lose the morale rerolls (which is the main reason for having him) on the turns when he's riding around. If you just want to be able to move to a better position, or you want another warfish for fire support it could work.
