Default Best Starting Army Type?

Hi im new to tau and was wondering which type of army is best to play for a beginner?
(Mech, Static etc) Just wondering what your opinions are on the different types and what from experience you have found most effective/enjoyable. Thanks

Also i like the idea of using 6 man FW squads is this designed for static and has anyone had any sucess with it?

It depends on your intended starting point values. I would recommend building a 500-point hybrid list (mounted Fire Warriors + Kroot). It will give you practice painting many different types of models and should help you try out the capabilities of different components in your army. It is a lot harder to go mechanized later if you have 60-odd Fire Warriors and no Devilfish.

Definitely the Hybrid list. Have a look at our Hybrid Sample Army lists in the Important Topics sticky at the top of this board.

Hybrid lists allow you a little bit of everything which is always a good start, without dedicating to a single roll. Then later, when you go more static or more mechanized, you haven't shot yourself in the foot and you'll find that the most balanced army list with be a Hybrid list in the end anyways. So it's a great beginning, a good means to experiment with later, and a good ending point for your Tau army.

Good luck to you!

ya id say hibrid list. then whennu see what u like you can use the half of the models that are static or mech (depending on what u want) and combine them with new models, so this shold be cheaper

well, if you're talking about for learning curve, the Hybrid is the easiest of the 3. If you are talking about least expensive, go Mech. If you are talking about most popular (around where I am, it's Static. As everyone else says, I'd probably go for Hybrid first. then branch out.

So Hybrid is best for a beginner? Any Hybrid players got any advice on how it plays? Was also wondering about 6 man FW squads is this used in hybrid? as i can see 6 man squads being effective against the CC armies i will mostly be playing. Thanks

OrangeTau:

Sure can, give a little read time over here: Hybrid Tau Samples. It can help you with a few questions and play style and just overall give you a feel for what Hybrids can look like, then feel free to do as you wish or continue here as we're all more than happy to help you figure it all out.

Think of a Hybrid has as making best use of the static elements of the Tau army while making best use of the mobile elements of the Tau army to create a really strong and balanced list without losing out to any one side.

All Battlesuits, min Fire warriors, and a Hamnerhead. But I'm a lunatic and you shouldn't listen to me.
