Default Ninj'O: Helios or Sunfire?

I'm new to the game, and I run a Helios configuration. My friend is constantly pulling his hair out as he managed to get a clear line at me, only to find that bolter after bolter rattles away uselessly at my Ninj'O. I use this setup:

Shas'O, Plasma Rifle, Fusion Blaster, Shield Generator, Stimulant Injector, Hard-Wired Multi Tracker, Vectored Retro Thrusters: 152pts

I'm wondering, is it worth giving him a Missile Pod? It would defeat the specific MEQ/Terminator/Vehicle hunter, but it would give him some good firepower on the way, and it would also mean he could effectively hold up a much greater variety of opponents. But is it worth the 12pts? It's extra victory points for the foe, and he can only shoot two anyway.

Well, the bad news is that at the moment he isn't in a legal configuration. Tau Crisis battlesuits can only have three hardpoint-mounted systems. The Shield Generator and VTR each take up a hardpoint, so you can only take a single weapon on a normal Ninj'o. :-\

That is what keeps them balanced. They are great at shutting down ranged specialists or smaller units of infantry, but they aren't very good at actually dealing damage.

I always read it as "He must take 3 pieces, he can take extra wargear for dum-de-dum). Admittibly, not everybody uses Shield Generators, but I have seen people who use them. When it says extra wargear, does it mean the "Battlesuit Wargear" option, or just wargear, as I presumed?

He can take extra wargear, but some wargear (such as the thrusters) take up a hardpoint, and no matter what there is only 3 hard points.

It should say that specifically. > So, basically, drop the shield, forget the pod and it's all gravy?

It does say that. Tau codex page 25. Basic summary is that things listed under the headings: "Battlesuit weapons systems" and "Battlesuit support systems" take up hardpoints, whereas anything from the heading "Battlesuit wargear" does not.

Yep. and if you want the extra saves, you could also take a hardwired drone controller and shield drones. That would give you a small extra measure of protection.

But if you take Drones, you can't take the Retro Thrusters. GW definitely took some pains to balance this setup.

True enough. I forgot about that restriction. Thank you for correcting me there.

Works well with Helios though. The one main danger, as I see it, is the short range of the guns, but suddenly you're a-bouncing right the way across the board! Unless you roll triple-one, that is. By the way, Iridium Armour, technically, doesn't lower the Hit and Run roll, and it's Battlesuit Wargear, so might it be worth getting it? I wasn't too sure about that, due to the danger of getting close and then being stranded, but this might be (potential) salvation for the gear. I still wouldn't be quite sure.

Seeing as how your commander has more wounds then he's ever going to lose from failed 3+ armor saves I wouldn't bother upgrading to the Iridium armor and losing the mobility. What is a serious are those instant death shots.
