Well they both have a +4 inv save
Shield generator is 5 less points then a Shield drone (I hope I can say that).

You can use Shield drones as extra wounds in a way. So long as you have more Drones in the squad then Suits, you can remove Drones instead of models. Which is always a good thing.

To do this follow the Tau codex and the war gear section.

I really can't say that one is actually better then the other, they both have their uses in a team's configuration.

Shield drones are cheaper than Shield Generators. They share the armour save and toughness of the model you attach them to, and add an invulnerable save into the mix as well. They're like the ultimate ablative wound.

Once the Shield Drone is dead, however, you no longer have that save protecting you from lascannons and the like, while the Shield Generator will be effective for all your wounds.

Personally, I don't see much use for either unless you're planning on charging out into the open. JSJ should keep your units out of fire.

I always use one or the other on my Commander, but only because its my style to.

LGT, this is getting creepy, we keep aggreing on things

i would say that the only place i would put shield drones is on broadsides, and then i often give them a shield generator AS WELL!!. it just means that if say, a shokk attak gun gets pointed at them, the broadsides dont start taking wounds straight away and loose the protection of the drones.

if a unit of 2 broadsides and 2 shield drones (assuming a leader with drone controller controller) suffers 4 wounds from a lascannon/plasma cannon devi volley, demolisher cannon, shokk attack gun etc then you would have to take 2 saves on the normal broadsides - rendering them dead most likely and the drones wasted.

it may be a lot of ponts but in the question of generator or drones - i say both or none (though i can be swayed to just the shield generator, just in case i end up in combat with a crisis team or something)

I would go with the Shield Generator. Drone makes your squad bigger and when they die, you have to suffer the leadership modifiers as if they are any other troops, while a shield generator exhibits none of that.

But that is just me anyway.

I prefer the Shield Drones over the Shield Generator. I prefer to use that hard point for the generator for something else. Usually a Multi-tracker on my Shas'ui or other such things. I take two drones as two extra wounds for not that much. Yes, once their gone, they're gone. But if you fail the save on them against a S8 or better weapon on a Crisis, they'd be gone too. The drones alow you to take saves without worring about taking wounds on the models that do damage.

So it is legal to give a single model multiple drones then?

I thought the wargear section said you can't have more than one of the same item.

So if I wanted to I could give my suits more than one shield drone per model?

Read the drone controller entry. One drone controller can control up to two drones. The wargear applies to the drone controller not the drones.

In my experience, having two shield drones instead of a shield generator, while being 10pts more expensive, improves the survivability drastically. If you aren't going to be in 4+ cover, then I highly recommend using this on broadsides and giving then a targeting array for their system (unless you're using markers... then I'd probably go for an A.S.S. instead). TL BS 4 is hard to beat for railguns (that's why I usually field Broadsides instead of HammerHeads). The drones seem a little too costly to put more than 2 or 3 into Crisis squads though but then I guess it's up to you to decide how many is too much.
