Default Ethereal

When an Ethereal accompanies a Tau battle force into a war zone can or does
the Ethereal carry any form of weapon even though he would be heavily protected say encase he was separated from the main Tau force? ???

Not really. They don`t even carry personal armour (unlike the Ethereal on the cover of the Dex) - though it would look rad.

The only "weapons" they carry are their badges of office (two sticks), or their ceremonary honor blade (a bigger stick).

It would be sick if the Ethereal had some kind of long range weapon (like the pulse pistol maybe?) but sadly no. Ethereals are more like a inspiring person on the field. He has the Symbols of office or Honor Blade so that if he accidentally gets into CC he will stand "some" chance of surviving!

The Ethereal's armor is his faith in the Greater Good, his weapon the surety that all will eventually see the wisdom that he and his kin bring forth.

Now, while those may be pretty sentiments and wonderful inspirational ideas, in all practicality he's naked and unarmed in battle.

The weird part, though, is that he's got a better weapon skill than any fire cast but a general (shas'o), initiative equal to the shas'vre and up, and 4 attacks (counting his two sticks). With an honor blade he's as strong as a crisis suit. All of this and no armor?

How the heck does an ethereal get that much practice at close combat and survive? Is there a dojo in the basement where they practice "Aun'Jitsu" and hit each other with padded sticks or something?

Duelling with honor blades is a Fire Caste tradition that many Ethereals take part in during their upbringing (it is, after all, one of the ceremonial ways to settle disputes between members of the 'Ruling Caste&#39.

Aun'shi's fluff specifically mentioned that he, personally, trained so extensively that he was able to beat even the Shas'vre in battle (an implied rarity).

With a focus on "tradition" and "ceremonial".

Much like fencing and other "modern" fight sports, duelling with honour blades is not meant for battlefield-application.

Exactly, Bonesaw.

While said close combat techniques might prove useful in certain battlefield scenarios, as Aun'shi's story explained - on the whole, Ethereals aren't exactly warriors and shouldn't be regarded as such.

They are politicians and/or religious leaders, who are always heavily guarded/protected and are usually only on the battlefield for observational purposes only.

Somehow even with Fire Warriors as body guards I'd personally like
to carry that little extra protection. ;D

Look at the Kennedy's & Reagan's of this world. Boy I hope they carry at least extra nappies / diapers for when the going gets tough!
