Default Sky Ray

Right I was thinking of taking some sky rays for anti aircraft fire,as they are used for this in the fluff.Until noticed in the tau codex there are no rules for this, and as the tau codex is the most current set of rules for this tank does it mean it is no longer anti aircraft.i only ask as i am going along to Damocles Gulf Crusade week end....and so need to be sure i know it appears in the Taros book but that was written before the tau codex and so its rules are replaced by those in the tau codex...is this right or am i missing something.........

It is still anti-aircraft if you use the Taros Campaign rules; as "normal" 40K does not have Flyers, anti-flyer rules are not included in the "official" rulebooks.

Also, I'm pretty sure the Taros book came out after the new Tau codex (about 90%) as I remember working with the new Tau codex in AB, and then adding in the Taros stuff later

No, Taros came out before the new Dex; though a lot of the new Dex`s content was already fixed, therefore you find a lot of "new" options in the IA:3 - though they are not entirely exact.

Yup, the Taros book came out a few months before the Tau codex, thus works pretty well with it. As Wargamer said, regular 40k does not encompas aircraft, so their's no AA rules. Thus I don't see why using the FW rules would be a problem in a game that does have flyers.

There is only 1 key difference between an AA mount and a normal tank.
against flyers normal tanks need a 6+ to hit them on the turn they arrive. AA classed units use standard BS and ususaly have a little longer range to deal with the extra 12" a flyer gets. so there shouldn't be any major problems.

Most AA units are quite good in a variety of roles, aside from just AA. the IG hydra and eldar firestorm exceptionally so.

Hydra's make devilfish cry...

I have a skyray if and when I ever need AA, couple of people have aircraft now, so its always useful to have to blow them out of the sky.

Anti-aircraft asside, a Sky Ray can play a great support roll. You get the armor of a Hammerhead, a pair of Burst Cannons, and a pair of Networked Markerlights. Spray infantry with the BC's, and use the markerlights to support all your other units. A Sky Ray plus a Fish-of-Fury equals 24 S5 shots at BS4-5. Or if you've got a Hammerhead that just hasn't been able to hit the broad side of a barn all game, paint your enemy with a markerlight. S10 @ BS5 is fun.

Yea I love my sky-ray! And the model 2 ! Its not really a high-powered unit but its markerlights are great and its really good when you pair it with a PF team! Let rip the missiles!
