Default Drones question

If you put a shield/gun drone or 2 into a squad of 3 XV8's, is the 3+ save still the one used or does it default to the drones 4+? (In the case of shield drones, I would assume if you lost the normal save the invulnerable save would then be used.)

Shield Drones always have the T and armour save of their "operator", which means they have a 3+ armour save when in a unit of Crisis, or their 4+ invulnerable save.

Gun Drones are another matter. If a unit of Crisis with 3 suits and 2 Drones receives 6 shots, 4 go to the Crisis, 2 to the Drones, and you take the respetive saves.

If I'm correct, shield drones/generators only give you a +4 invulnerable save and you can't use the crisis' +3 armour save and the drone's +4 against the same projectile (multiple save rules). So I guess the only point of using shields is if the enemy are using weapons that ignore armour saves. How common is it that you'd need the +4 shield instead of the crisis/broadside armour?

It just makes them more of a hassle for your opponent to kill. More wounds to inflict, a contingency save. It's a survivability thing.

It matters for lascannons and similar weapons that produce double-toughness Instant Death. Two lascannons hits on a squad of broadsides means two dead broadsides. The same hits on a squad with shield drones is, on average, one dead shield drone.

Keep in mind that if you can only take one invulnerable save per drone, so three lascannon hits from the same unit will still kill one of the suits.

True, you can`t use both an armour save and an invulnerable save.

But the Shield Drones have a 3+-save for themself (just read their entry in the Codex). They`re far better for taking hits than Gun Drones, because they have the same T and save as Crisis.

For example: A unit of 3 Crisis and two Drones gets wounded five times with Boltguns. You fail two saves. It is up to you whether you remove both Drones or a single Crisis Suit.

Another example: Your unit is wounded by 2 Lascannons and 3 Bolters. You can allocate the Lascannons to the Shield Drones (they forgo their 3+ save and take their 4+ invulnerable) and the three Bolter wounds to Crisis Suits (who take their 3+ save).

Cheers,
-Bone
