Default New to Tau, gundrone and emp question

Hi!

I am new to the Tau and this site and I have a few questions for you people. Sorry if this question has been asked before.

First question:

I have a buddy with Necrons and the Monolith has the Living Metal rule that makes melta weapons basic weapons (no extra D6s added for armor penetration) how do the EMP grenades affect them since they have no extra D6s or strength?

If you have any tips with dealing with monoliths feel free to add them!

Second question:

Gun drones are good cannon fodder (in my opinion) in that they can be taken out instead of the more important elements of the squad they are with. Lets say a Space Marine decides to take a shot on my Devilfish with a Lascannon, can I decide that one of the attached gun drones (still in their receptacle on the vehicle) is the target of the shot?

If not, is there a way to allow them to detach but not form their own squad and thus protect the vehicle?

Again, any suggestions are welcome and thanks for the answers!

The Monolith is affected the same way as any other vehicle, it doens't have any restrictions on gauss weapons or EMP grenages, just rolling extra dice, tank hunters, etc. But of course, it is a skimmer and you'll need 6's to hit. Also, you have Railguns, use them.

As to your second question: no. Just read the Codex. You can leave them on, and they'll disembark like normal passengers if the 'Fish is destroyed, or have them disembark (like normal passengers), at more or less any time.

first of all, welcome to the forums (yay, my first greeting! ;D)

i think the point about melta weapons is referring to things like the multimelta or fusion blaster, not melta bombs or the like.
as far as the gun drones, i'm pretty sure the drones cannot take the shot, because they count as passengers. i think the codex says that once the drones are detached, they automatcially become their own squad. that's all how i understand it, so it could vary well be wrong, but if it's right, sorry

Wiegraf has it all correct.
EMPs are unaffected by the Monolith, they have no armor penetration roll let alone an extra one.

The drones can't count as part of a unit with the DF so their is no way for them to take a hit for the DF. Just think of them as passengers in most respects.

Though I thought you only needed 4's to hit the Monolith, as it only moves 6 or something a turn, doesn't count as moving over 6+Skimmer.

All skimmers require a 6 to hit. They don't use the table thats used for non-skimmer vehicles.

I could've sworn is was specifically for 'Skimmers moving fast', as in 4+ to hit if they didnt move, 6+ to hit if they moved 6"+?

My rulebook isnt around right now it's in my car but I'll bet you a taco it's a 4+.

Page 71 of the BGB under HITS says skimmers always count as moving more than 6" if it is not immobilized.
