Default New to 40k - Hammerhead Question

Greetings all. Very new to the tabletop 40k. Been playing DoW for a long time. What are your thoughts on the Hammerhead rail gun vs the ion cannon. Just starting to read all the rules. Cant wait to get into this game...

thanks for your responses...

Welcome

Railheads and Ionheads as they're commonly referred to here, are meant for completely different tasks. Neither is, in my opinion, better than the other. They're both excellent at what they're meant to do. Once you figure out what kind of Tau army you'll be running, think about what it lacks, and then supplement that with the best gunship the Tau Empire has to offer!

xShaperx is right. Being designed for completely different roles, it is hard to say one is better than the other.

I do however usually run Ionheads - after terrible luck with my Railhead for 6 odd months, I switched to a Broadside Tag team, and find them much more effective, although you do miss out on the Submunition.

I've found the Ionhead to be very good at knocking out space marines, with its three shots at AP3, and other lightly armed units. I normally keep a Railhead around for the really heavy units like Land Raiders and Hive Tyrants.

No worries

You seem to know whats good vs what. Ionheads are typically used for anti meq (Marine Equivilent), and also have the ability to bust light armor. Railheads are fantastic vs other tanks, especially heavy armor. As an added bonus for the 50pt railgun, you get an alternative shot (submunition) which is deadly to anything not in Power Armor or better. Always be sure, however, to buy the Multi-Tracker for your hammerhead. Moving 12" and still firing is essential.

The Hammerhead is feared by tanks and infantry alike, and as a consequence draws a lot of fire. You need to be careful about what can get your side armor, always present the front to your enemy. Never the side.

[on a side note, running two Hammerheads can get expensive. There are other choices in the Tau heavy support to take advantage of, like Sniper Teams and Broadside Battlesuits. Like I said before, find out what your army lacks and supplement that with the big guns.]

I prefer Mech/Hybrid myself, but they all have their upsides. Best thing is to read all the tactica's in the stickies here, they should help you decide better on what you want.

Remember, the best army is one you like. Just because its effective, doesn't mean you'll get any fun from it
