My friend Steve always sics his Whirlwind on my Tau, its pretty brutal, especially when the squad isnt in line of sight to the Ethereal, or are my Kroot squads. (Thing is a STR5 AP4 Ord. w/ Pinning ;
![]() So far what I've been doing to counter that is sending a Warfish ahead of the army and firing off the Smart Missiles, praying for a 6 to glance. Someone suggested I drop down an inexpensive drone squad and blast the rear armor but I want a variety of tactics to take it out. He always parks it behind or inside a piece of terrain, usually ruins.

I would suggest a ninja suit with Fusion Blaster and flamer. Deep Strike it right down in there, after it takes out the whirlwind it can go killing whatever else is around.
Alternatively, you could use infiltrating stealths and pray for a 6. |

I'd use a fusion equipped stealth team. it's worked for me in the past, against basilisks and the like.

Yeah. Idk, its just that the thing is a murderer, it ALWAYS earns its points. I try to take it out by the end of turn 2 before it can start making a significant impact on the outcome of the battle. Hard though, esp. if he leaves an escort unit for it (he usually doesnt but there's been a few instances of heavy resistance).

Try piranhas, they're fast and they can use fusion blasters for armor busting.

24" move -is- pretty deadly/intimidating. I learned that from my friend Jeremy's Orks. Whats the word on Piranhas, are they worth their points? Made out of paper, after all. (Armor 11+Open Topped)

There've been quite a few extensive piranha tacticas posted in the past, I think the answer in general seems to be "yes", with fusion blasters anyway. Use their speed to get a shot at side or rear armor and they can spell death for tanks. I've seen people take them in just about every Tau list posted up.

Smart Missile Systems don't need line of sight. Send enough in his direction and it should do the job. (3s to hit from a hammerhead, 4s to hit from a fish, 6s to glance) Any result except an imobilised result on the glancing table is good.

I use a lone pirhana with fusion blaster in my army and it is pure gold. Most enemies will either ignore it, or waste time trying to damage it after it has turbo boosted. They are really worth while, suprisingly hard to kill, and below 100 pts. What's not to like?
Remember that after it has killed the whirlwind it is still behind enemy lines, ready to pop out and blast the back off of tanks. If they send a unit to kill it, turbo boost away, a remember that's one less unit for you to worry about.
