Default Barracuda or Ionhead?

Sorry if this has been posted before, I did a search but couldn't find anything.

I understand that the Ionhead and the Barracuda has very similar weapons, and that the Barracuda, whilst slightly better armed and more manouverable, is more expensive.
I like the look of both of them for my Tau, but is the Barracuda worth the extra points and money for its weapons, speed and visual impact?

Visual impact, I think it's well worth it.

As for everything else, heck if I know.

Thanks for advice.

I do love the appeal of a Flyer, and since I am getting Apoc for Crimbo, I might as well use the rulesheets.

The Barracuda is indeed better than the Ion head. It mounts an extra weapon (missle pod) and it has the capability to carry more seekers than a regular tank. Because of the flyers speed your much more likely to get a rear armour shot (IA rules) or just better because of the flyers 'always hit side armour' rules (Apoc). Its also tougher to destroy, as unless your AA mounted its only hit on a 6 and all weapons have to add the extra 12" of range to hit it, so its survivability is much greater than that of a hammer head. Ordinance weapons have to be AA mounted to hit it at all.

I personally don't take any hammerheads. My army uses exclusively flyers (barracudas and an AX-1-0) for mobile fire support (braodsides as a static firing base). Just make sure you have a postional relay on a battlesuit to make sure that it arrives as soon a possible.

My subtle diagram disagrees with you.
your "subtle" diagram contains Optimus Prime and Proffessor Farnsworth, it's heresy in it's own right!
Any similarities between your reality and mine are purely coincidental...

Thanks for the help Kai, I think you've convinced me to get a Barracuda (not for awhile though).
I will have a railhead, as their hitting power is brilliant.

In my opinion, a Dumbcuda (Barracuda, decoy launchers, no seekers) is an extremely useful escort for a Tiger Shark AX-1-0. It has 5 strength 7 shots, so it's great for taking down Titan void shields for the Tiger Shark to move in for the kill.

Plus, it's only a handful more points than a tooled up railhead ;D

I can't remember the technicalities of it, but apparently the Barracuda has had somekind of change that, and I quote from a club member, "has been given the short end of the straw as far as rule changes go". :-\

Well it's hard to judge with so little detail, but I'm sure it isn't going to break the unit.

Thats only if your using the apocalypse rules for it, not the ones from IA3. Rafe has been quite outspoken on the subject. Just use the IA3 rules if you want to use it to full effect (theyre legal in both 40k and Apoc)
