Default Devilfish: The Tau Taxi?

Alright, as part of a discussion that hatched at my local stomping grounds, it came to our attention that, at least according to the local veteran players, that you can buy a Devilfish as a separate Troop selection; as a non dedicated transport.

Now I seem to remember a discussion somewhere (on this forum I believe) where this was being disputed - if you could indeed buy a Devilfish as a Troop selection.

Of course, some of you may ask "Why would you waste a Troop slot on just a transport?" By my logic, I can see quite a few advantages, especially in smaller point games. Having a non dedicated transport means you can easily turn a stationary Fire Warrior squad into a Fish of Fury, quickly transport Kroot safely across the battlefield, or quickly transport a squad of Vespids safely across the battlefield.

Now, of those options mentioned above, Vespids seems the greatest to me. You can get them within range as you would a standard Fish of Fury. But the best part...especially against MEQ...Vespids have AP3 weapons, and can benefit from Markerlights.

Sorry, Devilfish are dedicated transports, and they can only carry Fire Warriors or Pathfinders.

Okay, but where does it say this? Because if I'm looking at the Troop section of the Tau Empire Codex correctly, the Devilfish is listed as a separate Troop choice (a non dedicated transport) just as a Land Raider in the Space Marines Codex...the only difference being, of course, that the Devilfish is under Troops and a Land Raider is Heavy Support.

It seems to me like, if the Devilfish couldn't be taken as a non-dedicated transport, it wouldn't be listed separately from the Fire Warrior and Pathfinder entries.

they list it exactly the same for chaos space marine rhinos, is it not enough the dang thing is right underneath the firewarriors?

and it can only transport pathfinders, or firewarriors.

The whole xv8 thing to btw, should be shas`o(els) attached to a firewarrrior squad. (just to save an argument)

Oh by Tau'Va!

Someone brought this up last week, and I thought that was it for a little while at least... Devilfishes are Dedicated Transports, taking them as Troops choices merits dreadsocking, and it'd actually be a huge disadvantage for Mech Tau armies.

Moving on.

.. here we go again.

It is a dedicated transport, period. Why else would it have the prefix "Transport:"? If you need any more convincing, on the left side of each Amry List Entry is some art and some text that indicate what FOC slot a unit belongs to - You have HQ, Elites, Troops.. and hey look at that, the Devilfish says 'Transport', not 'Troops'!

That's the short version of my post from ages ago: http://forums.tauonline.org/index.ph...#msg1057977611

Out of curiosity, I was wondering how many times this has come up.. so these were off the first page of results...:

The answer is always the same, the DF is a dedicated transport.

Put it up on the stickys then. IN LARGE RED LETTERS SO PEOPLE SEE THEM!

And include links to all the other topics that we have discussed this in...

I think I may just have to make some sort of uber manual on how to play Tau correctly by the rules... Or I could just grab my old-school metal dreadnought and a spare sock =P

Generally we do have this stuff in our own FAQs or in stickies, but not many people read them and it's a bit redundant to link to it more than once. If only people would use the search feature more often... But I'll look into putting it somewhere or just reorganising the FAQs etc.

Personally I'm thinking dreadnought + sock = win

My subtle diagram disagrees with you.
your "subtle" diagram contains Optimus Prime and Proffessor Farnsworth, it's heresy in it's own right!
Any similarities between your reality and mine are purely coincidental...

Personally, I'm thinking the Tau are recruiting some seriously retarded Commanders...
