Default Patfinder Question

I've been wondering if I should purchase some Tau pathfinders strictly for the markerlights. Just how effective are these markerlights at helping to deliver death to my foe ???

Thanks, Zachinator

Marker lights are great! if you can get any fire warrior squad shooting at BS 4 or 5 you'll be in good shape. Te only problem i see with them is that you have to take the devilfish.

Well it depends on a few extra factors but here's my 2 cents.

First pathfinder is better off to be used in bigger army due to their higher cost (you need at least a devilfish with the decoy launcher...warfish is better but more expensive)

Second they need to be fielded under cover...markerlight is a heavy weapon. so they can't move and shoot.

Third the effectiveness of the markerlight depends a lot on the rest of your army. But overall last game I played I had 3 markerlights (fire warrior and sniper drones) and had tons of fun with the increased BS, and reduced cover save 'bonus'.

The advantage of the pathfinder squad is that you have anywhere between 0-8 markers that can be used against 1 unit (2 if your shas'ui have HW target lock)...which can be very useful for the rest of your army. Just have them shoot first, then use them as you want.

For exemple your full squad of pathfinder decideds to mark the genestealers in the wood and your shas'ui goes for the flyrant. after the appropriate roll you get 5 hits on the stealer and 1 on the Flyrant. So basically you can use the markers for seeker missiles, increase your BS (up to 5) reduce the cover bonus to nothing, if pinning is involved reduce the leadership test, etc.

You see each of the 5 marker on the stealer can be used for a different 'bonus'

So strictly speaking: Yes, having pathfinder only for their markerlight (and the 'fish) is a good idea.

Although another fun use of the pathfinder is a mini 'kill-team' (3 rail-rifle, 1 shas'ui with targetlock and a warfish) can potentially pin 0-4 different unit down.
