I would say no. There have been several discussion on the subject that I can remember, and the consensus seems to be that while he is decent in hand-to-hand, any Fire Warriors he brings with him are still going to get mowed down, and he is still going to force you to take "Price of Failure" checks when he inevitably dies. Close-combat is just not a good place to have an Ethereal. The fact that you pay a load of points for a purely close-combat fighter who shouldn't ever be in close combat makes Aun'Shi a very bad investment. My advice, by the model (which rocks) and use him for a normal Ethereal.

I personally love Aun'shi but even I don't think he's worth the points. Therefore, I choped him up and made him into a standard Ethereal, but with the battle ready look of Aun'shi (you can see this in the Showcase forum if interested).

He has great abilities, but I find his points lack-luster that ability. He can really help out in missions and stuff with his ability to count below 50% troops as full. But really, his combat abilities are a mute point. His armor save is just not good enough to really be considered a perk. Sure, 4+ invulnerables are great, but not on a vital character who -will- die easily (it's like a guardsmen with a 4+ save... he's gonna get insta-splatted or overhwhelmed too easy).

So I love the model, love his attitude, love the guy... but not in the game. So I kinda keep him around, but use the rules for normal Ethereals.

If you can bring him to bear against an enemy Independant Character, then he can be decent. The problem is that his Parry ability doesn't work unless he's in B2B and then only agaisnt other ICs. The FAQ basically knocks him down too many notches to be really worthwhile anymore.

Now, there is the fact that his Rending still works on whomever he attacks and he still makes Tau units fearless, +1I and +1WS on the charge, but this hardley equals out what he loses.

You're better off just getting a standard Aun with no gear and jsut takin ghim for the Morale re-rolls, IMPO.

I use to always use special characters like Aun'shi and he was good but now i don't like using them as it doesn't fit in with the fluff of my army and i think special characters are over used in armys, the numbers of armys i have fought with Abadon the dispoiler in them is beond beleif

Aun'Shi is @$$, he has the amazing ability to get a FW squad killed in combat, woah! and all that for only 50pts, and you get price of failure when it happens! this is the deal of the century folks .

fasight is gas, he is amazing for only 170pts in a Tau army, unfortunately his restrictions are extremely potent in the larger games.

just use the good ol' Fireknife 'El, hell not fail you, he's the most economical commander.

Aun'shi is 105pts.

A regular Ethereal is only 50pts.
