Default Hounds with a save?

I was looking at the codex, and under the Kroot entry, it says that if you take a Shaper that it's members may take a 6+ save for a point increase. I was wondering that if you take Kroot Hounds with the squad, can they get the bonous, being a member of the squad?

Yes, if you pay for it, then hounds can get the armour save as well.

I would not recommend giving them the save though. Kroot always be inside terrain, and will 99% of the time get a better cover save than a 6+. Plus once you start adding the shaper and the saves in, your inexpensive kroot become a point sink. So, only use the shaper in large squads, and don't ever add the armor. Almost every weapon in the game can ignore 6+ armor.

However, it is helpful if you need them to stick around in combat where they don't get cover saves or the like and there's less APing attacks...

Again, I would have to disagree. For the cost of the shaper and the armor you could have a lot more bodies. That means more attacks and more wounds. A 6+ save is almost worthless. My second army is Orks, and I think I've made an armor save once or twice so far. Rely on numbers, not crappy armor.

I personally like giving them the armour saves. 'Cause the Shaper gets one, so if you want a chance at keeping them arround for a turn or two, instead of just removing models or trying to save all the wounds on the Shaper. And the reason I posed the question in the first place was not whether or not it was worth it, but more along the lines that the old codex said that the Kroot Hounds/Krootox can take the Sv/Ld bonous if the squad takes it where as the new codex doesn't have that option.

I never said that it was worth it when comparing to other options but the save is helpful if you need them to survive in combat as it'll cause 1/6 of your kroot to survive (without APing weapons). If you need them to tie up a unit that's threatening your forces or simply want to weather an opponents attack so you can finish them off, having a couple of extra Kroot around can help.

I agree with Scoutfox here, as the cost of a Shaper is a bit high and is equal to 3-5 kroot point-wise. I recommend only using them in largely kroot armies (i.e. more than 25 kroot), especially if you like the Krootox and you want to run all the options. Otherwise i never use it.
