Default Shas'o Vior'la Loresh of the D'yanoi Sept

If HQ units have to be either Ethereals or Crisis Suits, why is the mentioned character in fire warrior armor?

What if for fluff reasons, the leader of my army was a Fire Warrior?

Because it allows the extra S and T attribute to be added to the basic profile. And technically the leader is a Fire Warrior, just a high ranking one.

I think if your opponent was OK with it (for fluff purposes you could do it). However he would have a squishiness to him with out XV armor and reduced mobility.

A crisis commander fulfills multiple roles on the battlefield and this is reflected in the codex by placing him in XV armor to better accommodate his need for flexibility, mobility and protection from enemy fire.

As mentioned by TipTop every Tau miniature are member of the Fire Caste (Except the Ethereal)

Your basic troop choice is a Low rank Fire Warrior, as he gain in rank from 'La to 'Ui he can decide to either command a squad, or become an elite Suit Pilot. A few decided to forgo grade and become Honour Guard. So Yes your Crisis suit commander is a High Ranking Fire Warrior.

The suit really represent a mark of status, skill and Honour: So only the best will be chosen.

Yes, but it is impossible to advance beyond `ui without serving in a Crisis Suit (apart from Honor Guards).

A Commander most assuredly has experience as a Crisis pilot - and as a Broadside pilot, as well, if the bit of fluff in IA:3 is correct.

I don't know about that, CmdrBonesaw.

With the advent of the new Apocalypse Armoured Interdiction Force, you see Shas'el and Shas'O in command of tank contingents!

I'd say it's pretty likely they advanced from being co-pilot/pilot/tank commander ['la, 'ui, 'vre] on through commanding such Armoured Cadres/Contingents ['el, 'o] without ever stepping foot in an XV8...

The IA:3 info about the Broadsides mentions that an Ui who wants to advance to a `Vre has to spend some time in a Broadside first, before he is allowed to proceed as a Crisis `Vre.

Tank `Els and `Os? Really? I haven`t looked into the Apocalypse book fluff yet, so this is new to me...

Like CmdeBonesaw I haven't got into Apocalypse so that's new to me too, but since the Devilfish and other skimmer are piloted by Fire Warrior it would make sens to have a Shas'O and Shas'el tank commander.

And the broadside bit...I really need to finish my school paper to read my IA3.

While I personally believe it'd be typical that Shas'ui could not advance through the ranks without prior training in Crisis, Stealth, and/or Broadside armor, I don't think it'd be the rule.

And here's the excerpt from Apocalypse:

Using their speed, the Armoured Interdiction Cadre manoeuvres to concentrate its firepower on the target, trusting in its armour to protect it against return fire. The vehicles of the cadre are networked together with an interactive tactical control system, allowing the commander to supervise the cadre from within his tank, and direct fire quickly and efficiently.
There is a diagram, saying Shas'o Vionca Tau'er Daus resides in the Command Tank, a small tidbit saying "Crew within Command vehicles are believed to be of rank Shas'el and above", and a section in the Special Rules saying "Tactical Support: The Shas'el or Shas'o leading the force benefits greatly from the upgraded communications and sensor suite of his command tank."

;D

I think it's implied that all Fire Warriors have to be proficient in all modes of warfare - i.e. to be a Shas'O you have to know how to fly a Crisis suit, pilot a Broadside and drive a Hammerhead. That's how it appeared to me. But I could be wrong.
