Default Tau Knights?

It's all this bloody Mechwarrior stuff that's around, I know it...

So, Old School brigade, what do you think of the idea of Tau Knights? Would they be feasable? Would they be realistic? Would they be achievable without the Tau player being crucified for bringing yet another Gundam Wing model onto the tabletop?

We all know that my fluff is hardly "old school" and I'm more in the "avant garde" camp, but I don't see why not. I own a Titan that I scratchbuilt from non-Gundam parts and Tau parts (and while some decry it as heresy, more people actually quite like it :P), Vash has a Titan that was built solely from Tau parts (and his is universally beloved), so the "achievable without bringing a Gundam Wing model" is definitely possible.

However, Wargamer, I was given to understand that you were somewhat of a fluff king - so how come you can't decide this yourself? It seems unlike you, even in the just over a week that I've known you :

In my opinion a Tau Knight would be feasible. Either in groups of three, or even better as a Monat who's team has been destroyed and is deployed on his own. Of course he/she would be co-ordinated with the rest of the cadre, but it seems entirely possible.

What exactly did you have in mind?

Crikey! This crazy clown causes commotion like the coming of Christ. Certainly, still a curious and cordial cavalier in the countenance of crazed cads, curs and creeps who condemn courtesy as something corny. No cloud could collapse his crushing crescendo of comical crowing and crimson coiffure. This conjecture on culture comes circumlocutive, consequently...

It's largely the contradiction; Tau don't use "Super Heavies" as such, but they do seem to like their "Mecha". Knights are about the 40K equivalent of a Battlemech (arguably the Mecha). Whether they are Super-Heavy or not is debatable. It's this "fringe" nature that causes the question to form.

Again, part of the reason why I designed and built my Titan was because I did not understand why they would build battlesuits so small, when a larger model could mount more weapons and (potentially, with the right power regulation) be more maneuverable in a tight spot (e.g. canyons, forests) than a flier.

It depends on how big you make it, I suppose. And why should it be a vehicle at all? It could have a statline, like a Wraithlord (if I'm right, Knights are smaller than Warhound Titans, yes? So they'll be about half as big again as a Wraithlord?). Part of me says "it should be a vehicle," but battlesuits have a normal statline so why not the Knight?

Are you planning on making a model, or just making rules, or just floating the idea?

I guess it depends if they`re mobile enough for the Tau to fit into their tactics.

This means either A being small enough to fit into a Manta/Orca, or B being able to jit a jetpack.

Otherwise, I`d say the Tau wouldn`t use them

Cheers,
-Bone

In my fluff the Knight was halfway between a XV25/15 and a Firewarrior. Basically Assault 2, 24", no jet pack, 3+ armor, with maybe rail rifle upgrade.

if we go with Andy Hoare's work, there is at least one class of battlesuit the Tau designed to use in space. They have large thrusters, and fusion cutters on the arms. They are designed to fly between ships and cut holes in the enemy. My guess is that they would be a larger weight class.

I could see the Tau building something on the scale of an Imperial Knight. It wouldn't be too hard to avoid having them look like Gundam Mecha. A better approach would be Heavy Gear. They would look like large Crisis suits, slightly less anthropomorphic than their smaller kin. Given the Tau emphasis on teamwork, it would also help to have them be two or three-seaters. This would also push them away from the Gundam single-pilot archetype.

That sounds about right.
Perhaps the pilots are all veteran battlesuit pilots who have been promoted/undergone a trial by fire, but didn't wish to take command ranks?

They don't exist at the moment.

Imperial Knights haven't shown up much recently, but they are basically a class of armored walker in between the Sentinel and a full Titan. They are typically based on agricultural worlds serving Adeptus Mechanicus Forge Worlds. Their "peacetime" role is as protectors for the vast fields of crops and animal herds that feed the neighboring industrial centers. The Knights have a somewhat feudal culture as one might expect. Their original design was inspired by the Eldar, supposedly.
