Default Forge World XV8 heads

Being relatively new to Tau (just over a year), I'm just wondering if FW ever produced XV8's in the past which are now discontinued? I've seen examples before (including recently the Apocalypse book) which shows standard GW XV8 bodies but with the more sleek FW style heads.

Is this just a tease to show what we can't have as the heads aren't available to buy seperately? >

Yeah, that's the way most of the FW XV-8s come. They give you the normal GW plastic XV-8 sprues, plus some extra resin bits such as the new arms, heads, and legs. You could, however, just build a normal plastic XV-8 with what they give you, and just use the resin head.

but the head is quite big, and would look weird without the extra shoulder pads :P

But you can't buy standard XV8's from FW? They only come with Orcas and Mantas?

Why would you want to buy normal ones? Just get the normal ones from GW, and the better ones from FW.

I'm confused ;-)

The square head design are only from GW
The sleeker head designs are only from FW but only as Commander or XV88 models?
i.e. its not possible to buy a normal XV8 model but with a FW head?
The only way to get an XV8 basic suit is with a square head from GW?

Yeah, but if you simply get the 89, or even the SMS one, you get a posable, better suit.

The 89 can represent a normal suit, giving you the FW head and a posable suit, and the SMS one is good as well - a nice design.

I made my Deathrain from the SMS version, just gave them 4 missile pods. They look amazing.

The basic XV8 Crisis Suit and Crisis Commander are not available individually from Forge World, simply because they are not Forge World resin models, but GW plastic ones. Besides, who would need to buy them from Forge World if they can get them just as easy, usually easier, from GW?

The different designs, such as the XV89, XV84, etc., are resin conversion kits from Forge World. When you pay the $45 bucks-or-so for, say, the XV89, you're really buying a $20 XV8 and $25 of Forge World to take that XV8 and replace his thighs, head, shoulder pads, and whatever else with the resin parts included. You don't have to use all the resin parts, in fact, you could just use one per models and spread a bit of conversion throughout your suits.

It's possible to get a basic XV8 suit with just a sleek head, just buy one of the FW kits but don't use any of the resin parts except for the head. It's a bit pricey of a conversion though.

Alright, lets clear this up.

Games Workshop make the Plastic XV8.
- This is the one with the square head, the one you see in the codex etc.
- The model is completely plastic, and the arms and legs are moulded into a static pose.
- GW have 'addons' to this, in the form of the XV88 and Crisis Suit Commander, which add metal components for the Broadside (metal feet, SMS arms, Railguns) and metal bits for the Commander (2 Metal Heads, the two guns - CIB/AFP and some extra bits I think)
- Link: http://uk.games-workshop.com/tau/gallery/5/

Forgeworld make 'variant' XV8 suits.
- These are variations of the standard plastic suit.
- The Forgeworld ones actually include the Games Workshop Plastic XV8 Sprue, but have extra bits
- There are 3 Crisis Suit Variants, the XV81, XV84 and XV89. These include resin heads, arms, and legs, of which the arms and legs are poseable. The heads are the 'sleeker' ones.
- Forgeworld also make the Shas'O R'Myr suit and variant XV88 (XV88-2's) - the latter of which are completely resin models and do not include the plastic sprue, whereas the R'Myr suir does, I think.
- Link: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/acatalog...TTLESUITS.html

Now obviously, Games Workshop just sell their standard XV8, and for the variant suits, you'll need to order them through Forgeworld. That is the only place to get their resin bits, as they're the ones who make it.

Thus if you want an XV8 with the sleeker heads, you'll need to order one from Forgeworld, and just use the plastic XV8 sprue included. However, as it has been suggested above, Forgeworld suits are superior to the Games Workshop XV8 suits in all respects, being much more poseable and looking a lot better (alright this is a matter of opinion). If you're getting a FW one, you might as well build it properly as one and use the poseable components.

I'd suggest you follow the links above and look at the different suit designs to fully understand what people are talking about here.

Edit: ok, what Droids_Rule said.

More: In the Apocalypse book - clearly they've just used the Forgeworld heads on the plastic models for most of the XV8s, and used the full FW model for the team leaders. Also, the ones that come with the Orca and Manta's are the plastic XV8s with poseable resin legs only - no heads from what I can see. And the FW suits don't have to be reserved for commanders, the XV89 represents a standard XV8 just fine.
