Default Ethereals

I know that generally it is supposedly better not to take an Ethereal but before you launch into that argument, I want to say that I plan to take one (well at the moment anyway). That said, what is the best way to use the Ethereal?
Hide him at the back and use his Independent Character status to protect him?
Join him to a squad for the fearless rule?
Or take a unit of veteran Fire Warriors?

BTW my Ethereal has an honour blade if it makes any difference.

Only 2 reasons to take one:
1. For the LD boost he gives to the rest of the army therefore you can't hide them.
2. Better FW squad, either the fearless bit, or the honor guard.

Personally I just don't take ethereals (you have to take an XV8 HQ anyways), so I don't really know what's the best use for them. The honor guard can be useful, but only if you already have a specific plan for them.

An honour blade is only useful if the Ethereal is going into combat, or if you just want a cool model, game wise it'd be best to get rid of it.

In the rare case that I bring out my old Ethereal I use its IC status to sit back, boost morale, reroll to force failed checks to stop me from being assaulted (tactica somewhere on this site but can't find it) and pray that my opponent doesnt have indirect fire, a lictor or a vindicare.
I found that the veteran fire warriors werent much of an improvement and points are better spent on normal ones, but the leadership would be useful on a broadside team to ignore target priority tests, never actually tried this though.

These are just my opinios founded from experience.

You still have to roll, though. Even when joining the Broadsides (fearless BS for the win!), you still have to make Target priority tests, only at Ld10.

Actually, this is one of the best ideas around for using Ethereals. Broadsides hang back, have a 2+ save AND are accompanied by 2+ save and T4 Shield Drones... me likes! This might JUST be worth the points for the Ethereal (If it is worth the loss ofa second Commander is another matter...).

Cheers,
-Bone

1) My Ethereal has an honour blade because the models look a lot better with them than without IMO and I don't particularly want to convert a metal model at this time.

2) When I meant hide at the back, I merely meant using IC status to shield him from enemy shots (although deep strikers might prove a problem - but the honour blade might help in these occasions), while providing his leadership bonus to the main firebase.

3) I wouldn't take him all the time, but in fun games I'd like to be able to take one for the sake of background (and also because it gives me a cool model that looks different than the suits and armour warriors).

So the general idea is that veteran fire warrior squads aren't worth it and that it's better to place the Ethereal in a squad than let him use his IC status?

When I do field an ethereal, it's in a situation where I know there is going to be terrian that is tall such as a city fight. I will leave in by himself for is IC status and put him in a building where everyone in the Tau army can see him at all times, but the enemy can't get to him easily. Plus he will get a decent cover save if the enemy actually goes out of it's way to take him down. Someone else on this website does something similar if I'm not mistaken.

If you know you are going to be in a situation where it's not feasable, easy, or likely for the enemy to get to your ethereal during the game, go ahead and field him. The advantages he brings are worth it. If you aren'y sure, probably leave him off the table and get another Shas'o/el. His risks in my opinion outweigh the benefits. When a very cheap model (pointwise) can send your entire force running for this hills, you better be sure you know what you're doing with it.

i like to stick one with 11 bodyguards in a devilfish, bs4 at rapid fire is nasty, or sit them with two marker drones, even better!
and also it says 'unless accompanied by an honour guard..independant character..' so if he's in a bodyguard he's not an independant character, which makes him not bad in assault if he's got an honour blade

Timjim, your right but he's still not great at CC, and he never will be. I don't understand why people keep trying to find ways to make Tau better in CC, like the plan for getting Aun'va killed. No matter what you do to improve their CC ability, they're still going to be better with that nifty STR 5 gun they have.

My subtle diagram disagrees with you.
your "subtle" diagram contains Optimus Prime and Proffessor Farnsworth, it's heresy in it's own right!
Any similarities between your reality and mine are purely coincidental...

yeah, but in a situation where you get assaulted.. he'll be a decent counter attack, coupled with photon (?) grenades, [no charging attacks]
