Default Seeker missiles seeking planes?

I've been flipping through the Apocalypse book, and came across this; The fulff in the Codex on the Sky Ray seems to imply that it's for taking out aircraft. Unless I'm mistaken, the sky Ray would need 6's to hit and then the seekers would also need 6's to hit since they actually give you a BS of 5 and not and automatic 2+ to hit. Is there something I'm missing?

The skyray may use the AA rules as found in the forgeworld rules for the Ray before it was in Codex:Tau Empires.

This allows it to be an effective anti aircraft platform indeed.

Wait, since when did seekers have an automatic BS 5? I always though that they needed a markerlight to do that.

Probably but the Sky ray comes with 2 marklights, so we can assume that it's already covered.

They do. That is not the point. Under the old rules for Seeker Missiles, they always hit on a 2+ (no mention of BS). Under the new rules, they hit on an assumed BS of 5. So they are much worse against Aircraft, which are always hit on a 6 regardless of BS. In the last codex, you would hit on a 6 for the Markerlight and a 2+ for the missile. Under the new Codex, you would need two 6's.

But the Forge World Skyray had an AA mount, and could also launch multiple missiles, making it about as good as any other antiaircraft platform.

That is a very good point. Even if you just took 3 Hammerheads and brought the Missiles in from somewhere else, that is one of the better uses for that Formation that I have seen.

Bear in mind, while changed from the previous way, seekers from a Ray under FW rules are can still be quite effective. With AA mounted Markerlights, it is relatively easy to mark the plane, and then launch seekers.

You'll agree, that 6 missiles hitting on a 2+ was slightly unfair to enemy planes under the original rules.

Yes, this was always the intention behind the introduction of the Ray. As there (were) no GW rules for flyer's at the time, it was changed to be a precision strike platform, but the (superior) FW rules still allows it to be a moderately effective AA platform.

Under the FW rules, you are looking at landing 1.3 markerlight hits - enough to launch 6 seekers at it, with approx 3 hitting at Krak missile Strength. Against flimsy air frames, this is enough to most likely get a good damage result.

I'm more annoyed at the shafting the barracuda got.... >

Wait...so because of Codex: Tau Empire, seeker missiles aren't as effective?

Aren't as effective against aircraft.

There was a little line changed, meaning that marker guided weapons were no longer Automatically 2+ to hit, as they can now effect a whole unit. Imagine, 3 helios, or even 12 FW's at 2+ to hit from one marker! It would be overpowered like mad.

So they changed it to "an assumed BS of 5" meaning, that it had no effect on aircraft, needing 6's.

The IA3 Taros book gave the Ray AA markerlights, and the ability to fire all seekers at a flyer needing a 4+ to hit - giving us a half decent AA unit, without it being instagib for any flyer the Ray looked at.
