Default 'G18"' weapon- How does it work?

I have a problem! ???

How does the airbursting frag launchers range work? It dosen't explain it very well in the rulebook, it just goes on about min and max ranges. How do you find the min and max range? Is it something to do with the Blast template?

If a weapon is G12-72, the minimum range is 12" and the maximum range is 72". The AFP doesn't have a minimum range. The rulebook should answer you from there, but basically you just place the template on the table. If it is further than 18" from the firing unit, you miss. Then you scatter the template and work out the results.

I thought that you actually had to "guess" the range that you placed the template and then see if it hit the target model. If your guess was off, it missed.

No, that's just a little holdover from earlier editions, where you were actually required to guess the range to your target before scattering. I miss that rule. :'(

So as long as you place the template within the range of the weapon, you just roll for scatter and resolve normally?

Kind of takes the 'guesswork' out of guess weapons...

Right. The only guesswork involved is when you are close to the maximum or the minimum range of the weapon. Of course, you have the exact same problem with regular weapons, so the name really doesn't mean anything in the current edition.

Thanks! I get it now. I'm going to do a conversion that allows me to use the model with either a AFL or a CIB

Really? We've always kept to the guessing rule it makes it much fairer and when your good at guessing distance it doesn't matter much anyway. Placing a template and then seeing if it 'misses' is poor because shortly the weapon would still explode in the air and damage the ground under it. It takes the random scatter out of the equation which could sometimes allow the weapon to randomly hit the unit anyway even if it techincally missed.

But apart from that yes. The 'G' means guess, the first distance is minimum the last distance is the maximum.

I believe that the actual guessing is no longer part of guess range weapons because it would allow us to ignore normal target priority rules. For example, you could hit independent characters whenever you liked with guess range weapons, provided you're good at judging distance.
