Default sensor spines?

I have just recently come to understand what they do, but i cannot see any real benefit they give. Could someone explain this to me? Maybe give an example of when they are very helpful/needed?

When you want to hide from something but not be outside terrain, or when an objective is in terrain, dropping troops into terrain, picking them up from terrain, etc.

Not the greatest piece of wargear of all time, but useful in some circumstances.

When/if you don't want your skimmer moving fast, you can use sensor spines to get hull down in terrain features (IIRC). It's not as good as SMF, but sometimes you can't use SMF. It would be nice if GW released an FAQ regarding them and Cities of Death, allowing those skimmers which have it, the ability to contest buildings and drop troops off in them, but I guess GW just wasn't thinking to brightly when they came up with that.

Also would it allow you to tank shock units in terrain without making dangerous terrain tests?

Their is nothing stating that you need to enter terrain to tank shock units. And in fact skimmers can't enter (most) terrain (like area terrain).

I use it allways on our GW as there is only a COD board there. Pretty good actually. Your opponent cant shoot ya, but you can shoot him with the SMS...
