Default Bonded

Hi

I know that the point of bonding a team is so that they can re-group if the team is below half strength. My question is, what's the alternative. i.e. if you don't bond a squad and they go below half strength what happens? I thought you just did a morale check and did a runner if you failed.

Thanks

Yup - that's about right...

Really - bonded is truly only useful on larger or more expensive teams...

For example... take a 6 man Fire Warrior or Stealth Team Squad...
They only can't rally if they are below 50% - so they have to be knocked down to 2 or less. At one guy left - you get man alone tests...* :

Now - Bonded has truly saved my bacon on some of the larger Fire Warrior squads in Victory point based games... It's a big deal if you can rally a partial squad if it will save you half the victory points you may have otherwise lost for the unit running of the table...

Bonded is one of those personal choice things - I tend to use it fairly often myself - that and an ethereal can make some truly hard to dislodge units. You become almost as good as "and they shall know no fear" marine....

The Alternative is that you just keep running and cant rally. Bonded lets you regroup under half strength.

This is particularly usefull in firewarrior squads of 12. Below half is still 5 troops, that is up to 10 shots that you would lose if they kept running and a fair chunk of points. Bonded keeps you from wasing points when a unit breaks. This can be all important when dislodged from marine fire. You are unlikely to get away so rallying and returning fire with the 2 rapid fire shots a piece is the only way to survive.

The ability to rally can turn the tide in a fight.

So if you're under half strength and not bonded you can't take a moral test? You just have to keep running

Thats right. If you fail and start falling back you will keep going.

There is one exeption however. If an enemy unit charges you, you get to try and rally. If you make it you rally and enter cc, if you fail your whipped out.

I believe there used to be provisions for units about to go off the board or entering cover, but they simplified things a bit in 4th edition.

Yeah, in 3rd edition, you got to take an extra morale check if the unit entered cover or reached the board edge, but the unit still had to be above half strength to take the test.

Let's not get confused between Morale checks and Rally checks. If you fail a Moral check, you do a runner. If you're below half strength (half the starting number of models in the squad) then you cannot stop running - you just keep going off the board edge. If you're above half, you can attempt to Rally once at the start of your turn or if there is no Line Of Sight between that unit and any enemy unit. Bonded units would be allowed that Rally test in either situation even if they've been reduced to less than half thier starting number.
