A Monat Bonded is a waste if it's a Commander level. The IC rules override it being a unit and it reverts to an IC once the drones are gone - no All Alone test.

There's a link in my signature to the GW site's Crisis configurations, about half of which are Monats.

It totally depends on you. If your army is an aggresive, in your face mobile Tau army, then a Montat setup may serve you well. But if this suit is contrary to most of your force, you will find him destroyed before he ever does anything.

Buy the suit, but don't glue on his bits right away. Play-test him a few times first. (the weapons can stay on without being glued, even without magnets, or you could use a little dap or something to temporarily put them on).

unless you need more than one, a lone 'El is more protected than a monat, if you need more than one, 2 'Els is always an option as the extra protection is mostly worth it (theyre big on it at Dakka) but a word on monats, dont let them get cut off, if you cant bring in support in one turn then theyre dead meat.

Hmmm...Monats are good to have in smaller games (500-100pts) but by the time you want to get into larger pt games, They will come under so much attention because people will look at the model and say to themselves "Hey! He's by himself which means that he is packing somthing nasty...Must...Destroy!" :

But for configurations of the monat...It is better to keep him cheap and expendable...I don't like taking Shas'el's for Monats, as they seem to attract a lot of attention...Here are some configs I'd suggest (Taken from the Tau Mecha Bible!)

Sunforge: [Twinlinked Fusion Blaster, Shield Generator (Drone Controller, Target Lock)]

Specialized for Deep Striking against vehicles. Give a Monat the Shield Generator, or better yet, bring a unit of 2, one with a Drone Controller and the other with a Target Lock and kill 2 tanks* on the turn they arrive!
Advantages:
* * *Cheap. Specialized and effective in its role.
Disadvantages:
* * *Relies on Deep Strike to be effective. Is at the whim of the scatter die.

Death Rain: [TL Missile Pod, Target Lock (Flamer / Shield Generator)]

A team of these guys can put some serious hurt on enemy transports and light vehicles. Able to generate a large volume of shots at different targets, they're the 'artillery' of the Mech Tau list. Since you only need 1 Target Lock in a unit of 2, consider bringing a flamer on the remaining suit in case assault troops get close. Suits in this configuration also work well against enemies that rely on high Toughness instead of armor (Wraithlords, Deamons).
Advantages:
* * *Long range and the ability to jump-shoot-jump means they can usually find a piece of terrain to hide behind and therefore need little protection. With a high number of shots, long range, and high strength, they can ususally find something useful to shoot at against almost any army. Inexpensive.
Disadvantages:
* * *Useless against Deathwing.

Death rain is more popular as it is more flexible but if youre looking for a rambo to go in and say hello to something, nothing does it like sunforge.

personally I'm an 'El monat man, the extra protection is not to be scoffed at, the IC rule is a real bonus. but if you cant afford, go for a nice general Deathrain suit.

Yeah...I've done the math quite a bit:
Sunforge + Deep Strike + Enemy Armor = - Enemy Armor ;D
