Default Target Lock question

I've got a question regarding the target lock. If I've equipped my Stealth Team leader with a fusion blaster and a target lock, can I declare that he is shooting something (a tank let's say) and depending on whether or not he's successful destroying it, then have the rest of the squad shoot something else? IE, do I have to declare what all the members of the team are shooting at before resolving the shooting, or can I wait to see the results before declaring what the rest of the squad is shooting at?

It is my understanding that you must declare all of your target for the unit.

So in the above exemple, let say your got a squad of guards at 15 inches and a leman Russ at 7 inches. you need to declare that your leader (with target lock) goes fro the tank and the other for the Guards. Then your roll for target priority check (same as leadership check) to see if your Leader goes for the tank otherwise they all go (leader included) for the guards.

if the guardsmen are farther away failing your target priority would not make you shoot them but i understand what you're saying and that's right.
same goes for anything that allows you to divide fire.

I am unclear as to why the leader would need to make a leadership roll, it is my understanding that you may ignore a vehicle to shoot at the nearest non-vehicle unit. The only time he should have to make a leadership is if he is not shooting at the nearest vehicle.

Well, as above, all shooting that occurs for a unit is done simultaneously. So the Stealth Team Leader and the rest of the squad shoot at the same time, at different targets in this case. You must declare what each model shoots at, before you roll anything.

Then for target priority, you just roll take a leadership test as per the rules on page 19 of the rulebook.

Edit: Also moved thread to the Tau Board

You may ignore a small target to fire at the closest large target. You may not ignore a large target to fire at the closest small target. So if the closest unit to you is a vehicle, you still have to pass a priority check to shoot at something else, even if you can not actually hurt the vehicle.

To use the target lock you must make a target priority check to shoot a different target then the rest of the group. No? Which is the same as leadership...maybe I should reformulate my original post to make it clearer.

you don't have to do target priority if the member of the unit splitting fire from the rest is closer to his target than he is to what the rest of the unit is shooting.
