Default 1700 pt Tau army for review (New to tau)

Okay, I am completely new to tau (I havent played a game yet), far from new to 40k.

This is my first attempt at a tau army list. I am debating putting in a unit of 4 heavy gun drones, but I am not sure what to replace/what to change in general, not to mention fill the remaining few points on it. All I can say, is while I do like kroot, and I like their models, I do not plan on useing them in my tau army for visual aesthetic reasons, However, I may convert up some close combat drones to use as kroot, designing them somewhat like the ones from Half-Life 2.(just a thought).

You need to remove point values from your list to avoid copyright problems.*

I would drop the bodyguard and drones from the HQ.* They can only hurt, most of the time.* I would also remove one or both of the pathfinder squads, and give their devilfish to the Fire Warrior squads.* Take the bodyguard from the Shas'O and make two crisis units of two suits each.* That will be more flexible.

When I read the forum rules, before posting this I got:

"Don't show points cost for individual upgrades, its illegal and annoying to edit

Try to show the total points cost for each section (HQ, TROOPS etc.)"

So... the list could use a little help;

Drop the Shas'o to Shas'el, he costs less and is more effective for his points. *The extra wound isn't all that useful because much of the time, if the commander dies he gets hit with "insta-kill" weapons.
Bodyguards aren't worth the points for several reasons;
1; you pay 10 points for CLOSE COMBAT abilities
2; your commander is an independent character; if he's near a friendly unit (6") he can't be targeted! *bodyguards make him targetable.

Just keep a lone Shas'el with plasma rifle, missile pod, multi tracker (fireknife config)
ethereals aren't worth it except in larger games, and a smart opponent will hunt him down! *keep him on the shelf for now.
Pathfinders are difficult to use... for a first game, leave them on the shelf too!

Lemme suggest the following list;

1 shas'el (fireknife) 85

3 fw squads of 12 with the shas'ui upgrade
all in fishes which have DECOY LAUNCHERS (don't leave home without them) for 645

3 crisis in a team, all with fireknife config 195
3 crisis in a team, all with fireknife config 195
6 stealth 180

2 hh gunships (in the same config)
railgun, burst cannons, target lock, multi tracker, decoy launchers @ 340 for both

1 broadside with multi tracker 75

grand total of 1715. *This should give you some ideas as to what a tau army SHOULD be played as, or you could try for a "stand and shoot" army, (which really doesn't work well with tau)

Visit here for more info on how to be a mobile tau commander;

Hope it helps, and good luck!

Thanks, I will toy with that, I can make it with the exception that I only have 2 devil fishes, but maybe a sqauadron of heavy gun drones would be an alternative.

I dont really see how an ethereal can be that bad for 50 points. Generally when I play against tau, the only way to get to it is with an assasin because he is so well placed in the back.

Read the link; If you play a mobile army, it's harder to keep him safe unless he joins a squad of fw's in a fish.. you want that, sure.

Because you only have 2 fishes, I'd reccomend taking 20 kroot or more instead, and some drones too if you like. (even though you don't like their feel, just try them out... they ROCK!)

Oh, I know kroot rock, I use them in my guard, and occasionally eldar, Funny thing is, they are better at shooting than standard guardsmen. I just want a very mechanised appearance to my army, and I am going with a snow world, and well, no matter what they ate, kroot still look like they would freeze!

not really, Icefish dont freeze in the antarctic .

if you read the bible which Khaldun has linked for you you'll see that kroot are very useful to a mechTau commander to do sundry duties such as hold objectives and flanks.

Etherals are good, but hey are hard to keep alive in mecha, unless you drop them with pathfinders, and thats a juicy target :P
