as for 'good' or 'evil'...like just about evrybody else, they're for themselves, however, unlike evrybody else, they aren't xenophobes and they're willing to accept others into their empire
and heck, if i lived in the 40k universe, i'd rather live among the tau than in the imperium!

personally i think space marines are more evil than most races besides ork tryranid necrons(if they are evil) cuz eldar are just trying not to get exterminated imperial guard kill whatever attacks them and tau are fighting for the greater GOOD

Well, the Tau aren't all about being "good guys." They're down right vicious and they smash anything and anyone in their way. But they're not evil either, in a sense like the Dark Eldar or Chaos. The Tau are very much like everyone else--they have their own agenda, their own way, and they think it's best, so they're pushing it out there to everyone and anyone unwilling to step out of the way or accept it, will be involved in battle with them.

They are probably the only race that could really be considered as 'good' in the 40K universe.

Nobody would doubt that chaos worshippers are evil yet the imperium is on many levels far more sinister, harsh, brutal, evil.

Eldar or arrogant, self centered, uncaring of things they deem 'below them'.

Orks really aren't all that evil, they were created by the old ones to defend their last bastions, made purely for war and warp resistance. When they old ones were beat they had nothing to control and guide them meaning they just continued to do what they know best - fight. Its kind of like an attack dog running free with no handler, not evil, its just doing what it has been shown to do.

The Nids are a sinister race but not because they are evil, they just consume all in thier path. They don't hate their enemy or even dislike them, they just consume there is nothing more to it. Plus if you read genestealer cult fluff they are very caring and loving to those in thier brood (as is nurgle for that matter).
