Well, then let me be the frist to welcome you to this boards!

For painting and modelling advice you best go directly to the "Hobby" boards, all the experts and pros can be found there. The Tau board is for everything gameplay-or fluff (i.e. background)-related. Just read the stickies, they should cover most of your first questions.
I know, in the beginning, the sheer size of these boards might seem intimidating, but trust me, after a couple of days, you have settled in, and you`ll feel at home.

For now, IŽd suggest you buy and read both the Codex and the Rulebook (assuming, of course, you didn`t do so already), then go on and play a couple of Combat Patrol scenarios (explained in the Rulebook). They are small, short and above all fun games where you can easily learn the basics of 40K.
After grasping this, you can go on to larger battles (750+ pts).

There`s just one thing left to say for me: Welcome to Tau Online!

Oh, and of course:

For the Greater Good!

Hey! Welcome to these boards! Wait... Aren't I forgetting something? Nah... No intro gag for today...

Anyway, I reccomend buying the 'dex (Like the person above me said) of that army, and then go for the rulebook (If you have not got the Battle for Maccrage set. It is a must buy for people just starting.)

Once you understand the rules. You can buy things for your future army. You can take the path I forged (My Tau army, I got a box of Fire warriors, then I went to the battleforce. From then there on I had a solid 750 pt army when I first started Tau.)

So, good luck on your army, and tell us about it when you get it finished!

P.S Our board encourages proper English. So please, please, please, PLEASE!! Refrain from l33t/Text speak on our boards.

Hi! thanks guys! hehex! Really grateful for your advices. hahas!
Umm...Actually I began playing along with a couple of my friends here in S'pore, about 3 months ago. umm... I couldn't get the chance to bring much progress to my Tau Empire, due to academics commitments. But I'm glad to say that I've been counting down the days to when I can visit my local hobby store for a spending spree. hahas! Of course,I've been saving some cash. hehex! Just under two months! IT looks along time, but after that, ita 3 months of free time! hehex!

Well, one of my friends got the Battle for Maccrage set. THe other four of us just chip in S$10(about US$17) each for the use of the rule book. But 5 of us sharing one rule book. I don't have much time with the book. So I'm considering to get a rulebook for myself .

Still I have the Tau Empire Codex already. Re-read the Codex twice. Still unsure able stuff such as Deep Strike and Acute Senses. Making a Rulebook more tempting. hehex!

Umm...I have about US$ 120 to start with.Things I definitely need are the cutter set and a chao black paint base coat. I was wondering what else should I get??? I was thinking to start with a FireWarrior...Advices? Especailly about the RuleBook! THanks PPl!

Well you need Two Firewarrior Squads and a Commander minimum. Every army has to have two troops choices and one HQ before it can get anything else. Also deep strike is a rule which lets the unit that has it come into play after the first turn anywhere on the board. It still has to roll every turn to come into play though, so a 5+ on the second, 4+ on the third ect.

To keep it short, we have plenty of intro threads that you can have a read of to see where you can start.
They can be found in this sticky thread: Background Articles -

I had an intro thread somewhere, but it must be buried now, given it was for the previous edition of 40k. However the main points still stand - the best place to start off with Tau is definitely getting the Codex and Battleforce first. Yes, it's a bit of an initial investment but it's great value and you have a core army.

Oh here we go, we have a section on our website for starting up: http://www.tauonline.org/Cat/1/StartingUpTau/ - the "Want to start a Tau Army?" one is by me =)

More or less just a whole lot of reading material and links, hope that helps!

I see...Hahas! Sorry for my Improper grammar in my previous posts. So from now on I'll try to use proper grammar here. Okok...So i need to two units and and a commander. That means I need to save up more money... Guess I still have two months time to get extra cash.

So besides two units,a commander,Base coat and a cutter set. Is US$120 going to cover it? Anyone have any alternate route for my start up???

Don't mistake Farsight for a normal commander like I did :P
