I'm not a tau player, but I'm looking into becoming one (wtih the addition of my Space Marine Army). But I have a question- how do you avoid the fact that the Tau have horrible close combat??? I know there are Kroot, but they can be defeated. Also, how do you prevent the enemy from going into close combat? I have ideas, but I want to see what u guys got to say. thanks.

im pretty much a newbie too but what id reccomend is
1. MOVE 2. MOVE 3.MOVE ;D The jumppacks are awesome and tau try to outshoot/stall armys as much as possible. Most tau armys work best being very mobile however static armys can work. Oh and farsight is ok for CC

My personal approach is in my signature. From what I've found, it's pretty accurate. Moblity is the key, followed by cooperation and shooting. Concentrate fire into one unit and destroy it (or make it so damaged that it can't participate by virtue of objectives). There's some really good tactics on the main site here and I'd reccomend you taking a look at those. Links to them are in the FAQ sticky at the top of the forums.

Not being a Tau player (I play grubby ol Orks) the only advise I can give is don't go too top-heavy on vehicles.* The only time my Footsloggin Orks seem to do well against the Tenacious Tau is when they (my opponent) take too many vehicles.* Lots of Fire Warriors are good protection against hoard armies like Orks and Nids.

you'd think so wouldnt you?
a good Tau army has about one or two Fish squads and a suitable number of 20 man kroot squads accompanied by 2 or 3 HH w/ Rails and a sprinkling of your choice of suit. two or three railguns are nothing to sneeze at, sub rounds eat boyz for brekkie and kroot pump out 20 bolters a turn, quite savage and more than enough to deal with some boyz when applied properly. I'd be surprised to see more than 5 or 6 skimmers in 1500'ish points. mechtau isnt exacly all mech in a proper list , have a read of the definitive article, especially the codex part and you'll have some chuckles I'd imagine, might give you some insight aswell.
