Default A 2nd weapon on a deathrain?

I was thinking, wouldn't it be more efficient if deatherain carried a third weapon? Because I've a lot of people just putting a BSF on them just to fill the 3rd slot. I was thinking of putting a cheap weapon on them, like a burst cannon or a flamer, in case anything manages to get close to XV8, it has a better chance of making them flee. Also adding a HWMT of course, What do you guys think?

Give it a flamer. Anything nasty that gets close, like stuff from the dead transports, gets fried. It works really well when you have a whole lot of them. Massed flamers fun

Cheers!

I give it a Flamer.

However I wouldn't give it a HWMt. The chances of needing both in the same round are incredibly slim. In fact, the chances of using a flamer is slim enough alone that it doens't warrant spending the points to buy the MT and to make it a team leader so that you can but the HWMT in the first place. Its one of the few places where a MT is a waste of points

a XV8 with a twin linked missile pod, and any other 3rd system you would want toput on it, is see alot of people having BSF or a targeting array.

I take two deathrains in 2000 points. The first, a monat shas'vre, has a backup burst cannon for extra dakka. The second, a shas'el, has an AFP (I was just looking for somewhere to fit that weapon in :P). Still, a flamer would be a really good backup weapon, as it's cheap and can hit a lot of models.

I agree that the flamer is a good choice for a cheap backup weapon. However, if you are willing to spend the extra points, you could give him a burst cannon and a HWMT. That combo would be able to put out a good amount of shots, and at a safer distance than the flamer.

Problem with that is only a team leader could do it so you'd be limited to Monat's. Nah, just keep em 47 points with the flamer and in teams of 2(94 points)

I run 2 teams like this and that only totals 188 points. Now you have an average of 6 STR7 shots hitting every round. With 4 nice close quarters backup flamers in case fast movers come calling.

If you really do feel the need to spend extra points on a deathrain, take one of the members of a 2 man team and make him a shas'Vre for 10 extr points so he gets access to special issue wargear.

Then you can kit him out as follows.

Crisis, 'Vre, TL:MP, AFP, HWMT, HWTL - 83 points
Crisis, TL:MP, FLamer - 47 points
Total = 130 points

Now you've got a unit that can shoot at different targets with it's missiles or alternately the 'Vre can target an enemy unit out of LOS with the AFP. The AFP is perfect for this type of setup since it doesn't rely on a high ballistic skill as it is a barrage weapon.

This unit can really pull the rug out from under approaching fast assaulters trying to use cover since it removes cover saves and pins. Additionally, just wait until you get a unit in the open within 18" and you are able to hit it with the AFP first to thin the herd, then pop him with 4 TL missiles to finish off stragglers....Nasty

On a deathrain (twin linked missile pod) i would put a flamer, for if the enemy units get too close you can always fry them Especially if your playing against orks, but I'm a newbie so don't trust my advice 100%, its just what feels good to me.*
