Default the best way to field markerlights

Ok, heres the deal; I am getting a skyray to give my cadre some (technically) indirect firepower in the form of seeker missiles but I'm unsure of what units to give markerlights to get the best use out of my seekers. I already have one unit of 8 pathfinders with 3 rail rifles but I find they have a survivability rate of maximum 2 shooting phases :.

So, should I go to the effort of getting another pathfinder squad or equip marker lights to my squad leaders?

Is the skyray your only seeker missle carrier? If so, then t should be good enough to launch its own missles in time. I would say drop the railrifles on the Pathfinders, IMO there just not that useful on them.

I agree on dropping teh rail rifles. They're much more effective in a drone team.

If you have a Static based army, you could just hand out makerlights like candy to your shas'uis and give them Target locks so they can choose targets away from the squad. if you wanted to give them MTs you could but that might make them overly expensive. Depends. I used to use the MTs on Shas'Uis with Marketlights, but I wasn't using seekers so it was to get the Markerlight in for raising the BS of other squads and not firing Seekers. You might find firing a seeker at a transport is enough. The added drone team will also give you an extra markerlight in the fray as will having those pathfinders give up their rail rifles.

If you like Gue'Vesa/people you play with don't mind some CA/ a markerlight can be a nasty surprise from a Gue'Vesa squad.

Actually, sniper teams will be your best fielding platform for seeker missiles. Here's why:

BS4 Markerlight
Sniper Drones have Target Locks, so can target other units independantly.
Stealth Field

This provides you with the ability to fire an average of two seeker missiles a turn, with little worry about retaliating fire on either your Sniper Teams. Additionally, it gives you a total of 9 possible rail rifles in a single force org point, far better than the cost you would have to pay JUST for a single pathfinder team and devilfish. And, if the sky ray is loaded with SMS, it can put out some defensive fire to keep units away from your sniper teams.

I agree completely with Damian_Alpha. I currently have two teams of sniper drones and am considering getting a third to fill it out completely. They have good firepower, good protection (thanks to the stealth field), and reliable markerlights.

This coupled with the pathfinders (without rail rifles) and the skyray makes for a good amount of markelights in your army.

Amen, sniper drones are the jam. I find that running 2 teams in 1500 point and 3 in 1850+ are the way to go. Get mor ML hits by fielding a squad or two of static FW's with 'ui, ML, Bonding, and TL.

Set everyone up in differnt fire lanes and there won't be anywhere on the board you won't be able to get at least one crucial ML hit.

So many replies in so little time, thanks for the help! ;D Ok, so no pathfinders with rail rifles, get some sniper drones. got it.

The only reason I don't have any sniper drone teams is I don't like the idea of non fire warrior snipers. I might just use some converted pathfinder models since I have them :

Problem with Sniper Drone are that they take away a precious Heavy Support slot - a slot we desperately need to field either Railguns or Ioncannons. If you then add your Skyray, you have only one Heavy Support choice left for Anti-Tank (I don`t really consider the Skyray anti tank, against AV 13 he starts to have serious problems).

The best platform for Markers are Tetras. At 55 points a piece, you get a fast-moving, BS 4 markerlight in a light vehicle - a great deal, if you ask me. Only drawback is that we`re talking about a Forgeworld model, which might cause some problems with your local gaming group.

Thankfully, Railguns are not our only tank-killing weapon. You can take a pair of piranhas with fusion blasters for the same cost (if not cheaper) as that Hammerhead.

Now, I will ask this simple question: Is it worth twice the points of the bare-bones Ionhead to get 3x the shots? Yes. While the sniper drones may be stationary, they will be much more resiliant to return fire (any glancing hits on the hammerhead negates it's ability to hunt armor for at least the turn, if not permanently. As well, their ability to snipe while under the effects of the stealth field ensures that the long-ranged, powerful "big guns" of the enemy army will be of no effect.
