Default XV Weapon Systems

Following on from my previous post, what weapon and support systems do players prefer on their XV 8's and 25's?
I heard chatter around my local GW that it is impolite like to change your weapon systems between battles (with different army lists).

Personally I use the Fireknife mostly.

That's complete rubbish. Your changing your army list, why should you not be able to change your XV8's. Do they not understand the definition of DIFFERENT?

hmmm maybe i should've worded that better....like if i go to my local GW and guring a games night decide to alter my weapon systems, and change my list to suit, because im getting owned, other players get all annoyed and go "you cant do that! thats unfair! you played him with (the weapon systems in question)!".
Personally i think they are just getting psyched out, whining, and ultimately soft :. However i do like a challenge and considering a weapon and support set that i can use against all armies with some effectiveness.

There is no one system, but I can recommend a few very effective ones
  • Helios (Plasma/Fusion/Multi-tracker): owns MEQ & TEQ, and medium/heavy vehicles like nobody's business.
  • Burning Eye (TL Plasma, TA or shield): MEQ & TEQ killer.
  • Sunforge (TL Fusion, TA or Shield): Heavy vehicles won't know what hit them.
  • Firesurge (Fusion/Missile/Multi-tracker): Any vehicle this bad boy hits is likely to go boom.
  • Fireknife (Missile/Plasma/Multi-tracker): A 'utility' combo. This can deal with a broad range of threats, but not hordes or heavies.
  • Deathrain (TL Missile, TA or Flamer): Transports and medium infantry (FW, Dire Avengers, 'nid warriors) are all fair game.
  • Firestorm (Misile, Burst, TA): Nothing can beat this combo for sheer weight of fire, though its AP is sorely lacking.

Normally I'd suggest your commander take Fireknife or Firesurge, and then an Elite XV 8 team of 2 Deathrains and another of 2 Helios or 2 Burning Eyes.

If you want to go general purpose with your teams, use Fireknife or Firesurge, that way they can be a threat to most things that dare to get close.

The other extreme is one suit/team per threat type, ie:
Sunforge/Firesurge for Anti-vehicle
Deathrain for Anti-Transport/Anti-Medium Infantry
Burning Eye/Helios for Anti-Heavy Infantry

Hope that's of help. ;D

It is considered good manners in many circles not to tailor your list (or parts of it) specifically to the enemy you're fighting. Espescially after seeing there army on the table. Still, it's not a law or anything.

I`m quite happy with my commander layout :
`El with CIB MP TA and HW MT .
Other than that BS5 fireknive as commander is extremly potent as its BS fixes main drawback of fireknives (accuracy).

Ill look at putting some of those combos to work.
At the moment i have PR, BC, and MT. The leader has PR, BC, MP, and HW MT. Im looking at twin linked fusion blasters for tank hunting in another XV8 squad. But that is an idea in the pipeline.

Out of curiosity, what are the configs called that use the Cyclic Ion Blaster or the Airbursting Fragmentation Projector?

CiB is given the informal name: Ion (or Aurora when mixed with Plasma Rifle). eg CiB and Plasma is Ionblade.
AFP is known as Thunder, Hail for naming configs. ie, my commander with MP and AFP is a Hailfire config, a suit with Fusion and AFP would be Thunderforge etc
