Default Shield Drones, Shield Gens and A.S.S.

I'm going through my 1500 pt list, trying to find what to drop, and what to replace, and I saw my Broadsides(2 units of them)
...
Team Leader Shas'Ui(135 pts)
Shield Gen., SMS
Bonding Knife, HWDC(2 Shield)
...
And I saw the A.S.S. option for 10 points cheaper than the Shield Gen. But wouldn't I have to giveup the shield drones as well? And ALL crisis suits are rather fragile, being insta-killed by most things able to ignore the armor...which is what they usually hunt. I didn't put in a HWMT because of points, and because they would rarely be doing much to the same target(I'm planning on dumping him either in or behind terrain, and using the SMS if I run out of targets while moving.

Should I dump the Shield Drones? The Shield Gen for a A.S.S.? Condense the 2 units into 1? Dump both the Shield Gens and Drones, hide in size 2 terrain, and come out when I can shoot something and then go back in?

For me shield drones on XV-88 are reasonable. They do have +2 sv and +4 inv.
Shield generator is waste of precious hardpoint , i would go with Targeting Array , 88,88% to hit with railgun is just devastating.
I would keep them as 2 separate units for better field of fire . You can cover more of area , negate good deployment positions for your opponent.
What are you using for 3rd HS ? I would recommend railhead for its mobility to "fix" holes in railgun coverage.
This way you can put two immobile XV-88 with TA and drones , they will have staying power and very reliable chance to hit. While railhead will zip around and reinforce your defences.

Yep, that's what I'm using...Railhead and 2 Broadsides.

You can take the A.S.S. and keep the shield drones. The drones will move as slow as the A.S.S. broadside, and the broadside will be S&P so can still move and shoot. So the only thing you'll lose is the Shield Gen. which you can easily compensate for by moving into cover.

note - in some ways shield drones are preferable to shield gen. here's why.

larger unit - so losing a models may still allow the unit to hold the quarter
rail guns survive - failing that 4+ loses you a drone wound as opposed to 2 suit wounds and a rail gun. (most ap2 weapons will be S8+)

cons:
larger unit - losing the shield drones may cause a morale check - unit may run off the board.

In my opinion, shield drones are ALWAYS better than the generator, unless it is on an 'el or an 'o, as you don't want to use IC, and ONLY when you just have to have an INV save. Otherwise, always take drones.

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but I have a shield drones/broadside question...

Shield drones can only defend the unit that bought them, right? And any battlesuit can only have up to two of them? So if you have a team of three broadsides, then they all have to have drone controllers?

Yes, yes, and no.

Only one broadside, I believe, has to have a controller (its not as if one has it, then all three need it). However, if only one has a controller, then only he can have drones (thus, two for the squad). If two of a three-man squad have controllers, then there are a possibility of 4 drones, ect.

That came out wrong. I meant to say that if you want drones covering all three then all three need DCs.

Hey man,

If it were me, I'd drop the SGen for the ASS, and keep the SDs. The 88 can always run into cover if the two drones are lost.

hope that helps.
