Default stealth purity vs. stealth swingers: where do you stand?

Stealth suit theory:
I was told recently that gun drones on stealth suit squads were better replaced with extra stealth suits as the footprint of the unit when using drones is large. I understand the drawback. In my case, I was looking at a 9 model squad (3 suits with 6 drones) vs. a 5 model squad (5 suits) for the same points (150) and providing the same shots.
So, all else being equal:
Both options provide 15 shots.
Both options provide stealth field generators for all models.
Both options allow for infiltrate and deep-strike.
Both options include only models with jet packs (allowing JSJ).
Both options include only models with toughness 3.

What am I getting for my 150 points in each option?

Without drones, I have a smaller footprint.

With drones, I have a slightly better to-hit ratio than without (52% vs. 50%).
With drones, I have 6 shots that could pin opponents.
With drones, I have more wounds (9 vs. 5) and the first six wounds taken will result in only six lost shots (leaving nine shots left).

So, what am I missing? How critical do you think the footprint is? Is a smaller footprint worth having fewer wounds?

I wrote a tactica about this same thing, though on a smaller scale: http://forums.tauonline.org/index.php?topic=40908.0

Well, having never personally tested this unit before, I would take what I say with a grain of salt (although I have been playing Tau for 5 years...interesting...)

Anyways, I've always preffered the smaller squad with just stealth suits, easier to move and smaller footprint. Plus, if you are trying to pull off some tactical manuever in which they need to be destroyed (via close combat or something, to leave an opponent in the open for ranged weapons) the smaller squad will die out much more quickly, as opposed to creating a long, drawn out close combat.

Having tested it, the drones are slightly better points wise, but they're an absolute pain to move around, so I generally shy away from them just based on that.

However, in high points games, maxed out stealth teams with maxed drones are pretty nifty, and they make rather good use of markerlight hits. The second to last time I fielded such a unit, they took out shrike and his last bodyguard in hth as well, so keep the stupid number of attacks in mind for melee. However, due to morale issues, you should definitely consider bonding any squad that large.

I run just suits. Part of it is the foot print reason. Part of it is I like the XV15s and xv25s more than the drones. But there's also the lighter armor on the drones(Which come into effect with majority armor rules when they outnumber your suits). AND don't forget that if you get positionally sniped becasue of terrain angles or something happens that kills one of the Suits before his drones are dead... his drones go with him. make it 1 wound take out 3 models situation.

I like the idea of the drones with the suites but to me the unit in general is not worth it. In every battle that I use them the do not make there points back and never really do much in general. I guess I may be using them wrong but to me the unit is just not worth it. I would rather use Crisis suits.
