Default Project idea.....Need advice and tips on my 'hover magnetic Sky Ray'

Today I came up with an idea with my new Sky Ray. Do you remember when you were little and the teachers helped you make a 'floating something' using magnets. Well I thought that it would be cool if I could do that with my Sky Ray so that it can actually 'fly'. But I hardly know anything about types of magnets. I need advice on stuff like if it should be an electrical magnet or another type of magnet or building material that I should use. Does anyone out there have any building advice/ideas that would help? It would be very appreciated. I know there might be problems with metal models sticking to a metal table and how to avoid stuff like that or if I can't think of any way to avoid, that I should just except it. If it works then I'll post a photograph of my Sky Ray 'flying'.

Ohh, that's a really tough one... not so much the levitation, but keeping damn thing balanced.

One idea is to tether the vehicle at multiple points with see-through thread, then embed magnets in the chassis (I recommend landing gear wells) and at corresponding spots on the base (you'll need a large base).

It could be possible to create a base that (using strong earth magnets) could levitate a plastic model that has magnets in the middle and side, but balancing would be hard. then you could just push the base.

I'm just going from a theoretical stand point, BUUUT:
Calculus would tell us to cut it into an infinite number of cross-sections along the x and z axis respectively, plot the masses of each piece on a graph of mass v. distance. Find the center of gravity, put everything back together, and glue the magnets equal distance away from the center. Tether the ship on either poles or ropes.

Or you could do the tried-and-true way of finding a way to make the bottom of the ship flat, and run your fingers across the bottom while being held.

For example: take your remote, put it across both index fingers. Slowly bring the fingers together(allow the remote to tilt, but keep your fingers level with one another). You'll find the Center of Mass that way. Then put x magnets equi-distance away from that point, and you should be good.

I think your best option would be to tether it via several threads in a triangle shape with a larger magnet in the center. You'll barely be able to see the threads, and it will keep it nice and straight.

I tried this very same concept once when I was younger, as a science fair project. The trick is that the magnets on the bottom of the ray must be facing outward in an outward (downword) dome shape. The opposite facing magents should be placed evenly in a slightly larger dome underneath the model. The sizes of the too corresponding strustures must be even, smooth and balanced and then you shouldn't even need a tether, (Though it will occasionally fall).

This is a different application of the idea than what I used. In my experiment the magnets were set paralel with each on 45 degree angles on the bottom of a wooden train and top of a track.

This idea is a bit tedius, but would allow for a very decorative (Albeit HUGE) base.

I'd like to see a pic if you can pull it off.

This is where something awesome I saw at a local painting comp. once comes in awesomely. Using blue LED lights, you get a bunch of clear, plastic string and use a sizeable enough chunk to fill up most of the hover motor engine thingy...

Before you attach that though, you put a blue LED light into the hollow part of the motor and then attach the string loosely enough so that you can gain acces to the lights somehow.

Then you use the strings to secure it to the base, and if what I said is at all helpful and you manage to decode it, you will have a very kick-ass looking hover vehicle.

A guy named Earnshaw did a lot of math and proved that it's impossible. Clicky.

We're talking generally about tethered or guided levitation*, not "free-form" stuff like that guy addresses.

*Either attraction or repulsion based, think bullet trains.
