Default An idea of a variant army list

Ok the thought of varying the Tau force org. chart intrigues me, so I came up with a variant army list:
Tau Shas M'Yen (Unforseen fire) army list:
Stealth suits and pathfinders are now troops
You must take at least one of each
Fire warriors are elites and Kroot warriors are fast attack
You can't take any vehicles of any sort (not even DF for Pathfinders!)
All suits (Crisis, stealth, broadside, commander) are equipped with hard-wired black sun filters.
If the Tau player chooses so he/she may elect to play night fight in any scenario.

The idea is a Tau strikeforce covert ops. team. They go in at night destroy an objective and run or they could just abush an army at night. I didnt allow vehicles, because it seems like the enemy would detect them easily. Let me know if it would be imbalanced or unpopular for some reason.

hmm... In the codex, it makes a reference to the tau at night;

"the tau are good night fighters and when darkness falls they move into range of the defences and systematically destroy them"
but also;
"The Fire caste are entirely committed to mobile warfare in which targets are identified, tracked and killed in an efficient and cautious manner"

Therefore, It makes sense to keep the list the way it is when night fighting.* Pathfinders with a devilfish can creep forward into position, so why not more trained firewarriors?* Perhaps an elites choice of fw's that have all the rules of pathfinders and cost 12pts each?* And can each take a blacksun filter 2pts each.

That sort of thing.* Read the beginning of the codex, and you will begin to see.

although the codex states we are excellent at night fighting, tau dont actually seem to be that good at it. Blacksun filters are only best for the HH and B/sides seeing as its rare to put on other modles, costs quite a bit and takes up hardpoints.

with a standard, sit still and shoot list, yes. With a mobile list, no.

Well, the idea is cool, but I'm afraid grossly over-powered.

Here's what I see happening (much like an abused Bein-Tal army):

HQ - Ethereal
Elite - Crisis x 3 with Twin-linked Missile Pods and Target Locks (all having black sun filters automatically)
Elite - Crisis x 3 with Twin-linked Missile Pods and Target Locks (all having black sun filters automatically)
Elite - Crisis x 3 with Twin-linked Missile Pods and Target Locks (all having black sun filters automatically)
Fast - Kroot x 20 (full out running towards the enemy to draw attention)
Fast - Kroot x 20 (full out running towards the enemy to draw attention)
Troops - Pathfinders x 8; Railrfiles x 3
Troops - Pathfinders x 8; Railrfiles x 3
Troops - Pathfinders x 8; Railrfiles x 3
Troops - Pathfinders x 8; Railrfiles x 3
Troops - Stealths x 6 (staying up with the Kroot to take advantage of the spare markerlights; right before the Kroot attack if they survive)
Troops - Stealths x 6 (staying up with the Kroot to take advantage of the spare markerlights; right before the Kroot attack if they survive)
Heavy - Broadsides x 2; Black Sun Filters
Heavy - Broadsides x 2; Black Sun Filters

Fitting snuggly to the 1850 tourni points lists. People would go nuts when they saw railrifles being this common and with that many markerlights spare, the entire army is ranged at sitting 36 inches, and with that many lights, those 12 railrifles will hit almost every turn and kill every turn. Huge problem for enemies. Then on top of it, the stealths come flying ahead, using spare lights to really punish whatever the railrifles don't mop up. The crisis suits and broadsides will probably eliminate all armour in a turn or two, using spare lights. The Ethereal just keeps everyone standing put.

I think everyone would cry Frommage should this be fielded, just like a really abused Eldar Craftworld list.

I like the idea though!

I agree with MalVeauX though you can even drop the rail rifles and still have an AMAZINGLY powerful list. How? All those marker lights! The whole rest of the army would be hitting on 2's with no chances of cover (32 markers lights = 16 hits per turn.). It's a shame you couldn't take a vehicle or two b/c with that many marker lights you'd have a MASSIVE seeker missile 1st turn strike. You could vaporize whole units of devastators along with multiple dreads.

hmmmm well what if we limit crisis' to 1 squad, broadsides to 1 squad, and no ethereals. Maybe making Pathfinders have to take Devilfishes? Thanks Malveaux for pointing out how overpowered it could become and BTW its Biel-Tan. And Khaldun the story of the Nimbosa colony is what inspired me. These limitations make sense, because the suits would probably be easy to detect too and i don't think an ethereal would accompany fire warriors on a covert mission. Let me know your ideas of ways to fix it.

also this army is very vulnerable to deepstriking and bike units.

Biel-Tan? I think the abusded army list is Alatoc. (sp)

For ****'s sake, it makes you move your frigen army off the feild, then bring them in in reserves! How are you supposed to use srategy against that?

Just a thought, you could do this legally with the standard codex. Just put requirements instead of limitations and don't move things.

Example:

HQ:

Required to take an Ethereal (or Aun'Shi as a replacement)
All other HQ selections are as normal, but commanders must choose the black sun filter in addition to any other gear he has.

Elites:

Required to take a minimum of 1 Stealth Suit team.
All other Elite selections are as normal.

Fast Attack:

Required to take a minimum of 2 Pathfinder Teams (with the codex rules).
Other Fast selections taken as normal.

Troops:

Normal troop selection options, but limited to 0-2 Firewarriors teams and 0-2 Kroot squads (to represent the lack of firewarriors, but increased amount of pathfinders, and to prevent an all kroot force to skim points for the number crunchers).

Heavies:

Broadsides are taken as normal, but are required to take a leamleader with a Black sun filter in each squad.
Hammerheads may not be taken.

[hr]

What this leaves us with, is the following minimal force:

Ethereal
Stealth Suits x 1
Pathfinders x 2
Firewarriors -or- Kroot x 2

So as a minimum, it still works on all levels, just not as efficient as the standard list of course and much more vulnerable.

Fixed up a bit to higher point games, it would look more like:

Ethereal
Stealth Suits
Stealth Suits
Crisis Team with Plasma/Fusion
Pathfinders; devilfish; railrifles; seeker missile
Pathfinders; devilfish; railrifles; seeker missile
Pathfinders; devilfish; railrifles; seeker missile
Kroot (or firewarriors)
Kroot (or firewarriors)
Broadside Team; black sun filter
Broadside Team; black sun filter
