Default Is there any point in taking rail rifles on pathfinders?

Bearing in mind that

1) We now hve sniper drones,

2) Vespids are now available as fast and effective Marine killers, and

3) the new markerlight rules mean that just two or three markerlight hits combined with a FOF or just rapid fire can wipe out ridiculous numbers of basic troops,

...is there really any reason to spend the points on rail rifles for pathfinders? Surely they are just as much of a target with them as without? Also, am I right in thinking that rail rifle pathfinders do not get markerlights? If so, why deprive them of something that can potentially turn an average shooting phase into a massacre?

From my limited experience, it would seem that markerlight hits are absolutely essential to make the most out of Tau weaponry.

I have a couple of other markerlight questions too.

If two FW squads have Shas'uis with markerlights and a hardwired target lock, can they markerlight for each other?

Also, seeing as markerlights now count as a weapon in shooting, can I use a markerlight hit from (for instance) a FW Shas'ui to increase the BS of a pathfinder squad, thereby making muliple markerlight hits easier to attain?

Well, that's all my questions for now, hope I'm not showing my inexperience too much.

Ok. Sniper Drones are much better than Rail RIfles, seeing as they're cheaper and have stealth.
In the Codex, It says markerlights cannot benefit from other markerlight hits. So your final question answer is no.

Also, for the other question, I think the answer is yes, with the target lock, they could shoot markerlights for eachother. Also, you could give them the HW MT also so you can still shoot your pulse weaponry.

Jusdt pipped me to it :P

Yup, that seems about right.

I personaly don't use rail rifls, I Like my markerlight hits too much.

The thing is though, you do have to think about how many marker hits you actualy need on a single unit.

Unfortunately, they may not Markerlight for each other with just the 'lights on the Shas'ui. You must resolve all of the shooting for one unit before you move on to the next. Even with Target Locks, you can not fire one Markerlight from a unit, then fire another Markerlight from another unit, then go back and fire the first unit's pulse rifles. This is why you need Networked Markerlights on Marker Drones. :-\ Otherwise, you have to "chain" Markerlights together, starting with either a unit of Pathfinders, a Stealth Team, or some other Markerlight that you don't need for the unit it belongs to.

There is no good reason to put Rail Rifles in Pathfinders any more. Markerlights are much better for them to use, and Sniper Drones are much better at sniping. It is easy enough to use the Pathfinder models to represent Sniper Drones, though.

Cool, thanks for the input folks

I must apologise for completely missing the blatant "Markerlights do not benefit from the effects of other Markerlights" bit in the codex.

I agree that choosing your needed number of markerlight hits is important, but with a BS so low, it would seem that a lot of shots would be needed to get a usable number of hits. I uess firing with a whole squad of pathfinders would hopefully leave a spare hit or two to use in case the squad doesn't suffer a shooty death. I assume that would just make it REALLY important to choose your target carefully.

I shall promptly remove any rail rifle pathfinders from my army, as you have all confirmed my suspicions that they're a bit of a waste.

3 hammerhead is why you'd put rail rifles in the hand of pathfinders

Well, I wouldn't call them that much of a waste. I'm going to play against an infantry-heavy Sisters of Battle army soon, and I am trying to take as many rail-rifles as I can get, so if your opponent is using a lot of infantry with +3 saves, why not?

Besides, Markerlights might be really useful, but there are only so many you can really make good use of on one target. 6 Pathfinders with Markerlights gives me an average of 3 markerlight hits, which should be enough.

If you need the range of the rifles, then take them. 6' move+12' range can be ineffective against an assault-focused army, since you'll be <12 in. away.
