Default Question?

i have started a campaign called the battle of Tal'Rish, and i am fighting against SM and DH. after the first engagement i realized i could not hold my own against them. so i am trying the live today fight tomorrow tactic. i keep most of my units within 18" of my table edge. once i am overwhelmed i fall back off the board and keep around 75% of my units. is this a good tactic? if it isn't could you tell me a better tactic? It is a cityfight so keep that in mind.

Probably not the best tactic to rely on running away by failing ld.... If you're having trouble with cc, put your fw's in fishes and/or get lots of kroot, hh, anything with a jetpack. That way, you can outrun basic assault troops. Be sure to have plenty of firepower reserved to take out anything with 12" movement or more that threatens you though.

Does losing troops in a game impact later campaign games? I'm just wondering because having your whole force fall off the board is basically just forfeiting games which is kind of pointless - it's no fun for anyone. Why not just change your force? DHs have virtually no anti-tank capabilities unless they include IG. A hammerhead ought to pose quite a problem for them. Similarly, your force probably needs to use a lot of plasma/fusion crisis suits (in Cityfight short range weaponry isn't quite a problem so FB work well) and move in and out of terrain, playing cat & mouse. FWs are of very limited value in a CF. Kroot are a LOT better.

i say try to be more offensive, if u kill them they cant kill u. jetpax are good, u can out run stuff while still shooting them. also fish are good. they make ur FWs mobile.

I'd say keep that tactic but strengthen your defenses, Keep your cool and try to flank them with an inexpensive unit or fish with some fw. if you can flank them it will buy you more time to hammer them with everything else.

DF don't work so well in CF though: The abundance of difficult terrain makes them difficult to maneuver. That said, they can be extremely good at blocking assaults since they can easily block an entire street. A hammerhead is just as good though and is virtually impervious to being assaulted except by powerfists and meltabombs (both of which need 6's to hit and then can only glance if you've moved move than 6"). So I'd opt for a HH instead. However, I still think taking a lot of FWs is not a good idea with CF. Kroot are cheaper and just as effective when firing in large #'s, plus they are a lot better in assault.

Here's one idea: Bring in a DF or HH and block the enemy's assault on your kroot by blocking an entire street. Then the following turn the vehicle moves away and now you have a horde of kroot assault them. Of course the kroot need to survive the hail of fire from the previous turn, but a sacrificial line of FWs in front of them (e.g., the ones that just got out of the DF) might be able to take one for the greater good.... It's basically a FoF but one in which you're expecting (and hoping) the FWs get shot at in order to save your kroot. As a 1-2 punch (rapid fire plasma followed by kroot charge next turn) it could be very effective if used correctly.

It may just be me but I find that two squads of fire warriors rapid firing will usually kill most of a squad of marines, and with so much cover in cityfight (I may misunderstand city fight since I've only done it once) makes fire warriors much more survivable against enemy shooting so I'd probably start with 4 squads of fire warriors and work from there, 2 quads of kroot in bigger games if you have the points to spare.

actually, a double FoF will kill a little over 6 marines on average. THAT is scary.
