Default Anti Template circles

i have a question on setting up units 2 inches apart making a large circle (ex. 4 guys make a squre 5 make a hexagon ect.) i found this really usefull when fighting agiesnt flamers or ordinance where the max they can hit with the large blast is three units (of a 12 man circle of FWs)

Main question is "Is it Legal?"

As long as all your models are within coherency distance of each other then the answer is yes. There are several good "formations" for avoiding blast weapons. I believe a line is a fairly good one as well.

A line is actually the best. If you let a flamer get into your flank, you deserve it, anyway...

And I agree with Falstead, as long as everyone is in unit coherency, it is egal. The main problem I can see is that this cricle of yours takes up a lot of space...

Against blast weapons you are just as hard, if not slightly harder to hit.
Against a flamer from the front it will hit at most three models, far less if the flamer is to close to you, because of the way it is shaped.

However if you're in a line and a flamer gets beside you...

It might be usefull to avoid patern weapons, but very anoying when you are attempt to put as much fire on the ennemy as possible. Having a wide formation can result in a lot of unit not having a LoS or not being in range. If you lose models, your units can be out of coerency and that can be a disaster next turn.

But on the other hand, a circle takes up a lot o space in two dimensions, and not just one, as a line would do.

So, you`re more vulnerable to CC troops.

Besides, I dislike letting my troops run around like on some kind of square dance festival (and now, a circle!). This is a battlefield, dammit, and on a battlefield you run around in lines! And maybe squares! but definitely not circles!

It's also very good for taking out those pesky deep-striking units. Except for a Monolith :

And I'm on the side who says a circle is better overall. While it's true that a line has the least amount of linear distance within a circle, or a segment between two points, the circle spreads you out horizontally as well as vertically, allowing you to create"pockets" which keep Deepstriking models at a low, while also giving some survivability against templates. However, if you have a lot of models/units (guard, Nids), then you can probably do either one with about the same amount of effectiveness.

I think that you are forgetting about the inferno cannon too. I think that Hexagon is the best.
