Default Combat patrol. Setup for friends.

I have two friends who are intrested in starting 40k, one for tau and one for marines. Since kill-team rules are far too complex to explain from memory I thought I'd start them out on combat patrol.

Another thread like this will be set up on the Marine board if you want to help that faction.

The models I have available are

32 fire warriors; two 12 man squads, one 8 man squad
sniper drone team
ethereal
fireknife commander
two deathrains
one burning eye
one 'nid hunter'; burst cannon, flamer, multitracker
three stealthsuits
piranha
16 kroot, one shaper
12 gue'vesa
three pathfinders, one shas'ui, three rail rifles
two broadsides, one with plasma
two devilfish
one hammerhead

Combat patrol is 400pts, so I wrote up this list for the tau player very quickly.

Fire warrior squad
12 men, devilfish-200pts

Fire warrior squad
12 men, devilfish-200pts

total-400pts

I taught him Jump-shoot-jump the last time around, I'm going to try to teach him fish of fury.

See the list on the marine board if you want to make suggestions.

so what your saying is that oven cleaner can remove paint from plastic models? and after that, you take a toothbrush to your plastic model, and the paint just comes off?

Fairly effective for teaching a mech list. Fish of Fury is an effective tactic, just remember to teach him to target isolated units.

since your not going competive its probably a good list, obviously if you wanted a harder to beat list I'd cut off a few fire warrior and add decoys, and MT. But your not competitive so... looks good.

I was thinking of dropping a squad and letting him take crisis or kroot, we can't get into very complex rules as this is his second game and the Marine player's first.

Yep, we (a group I play with in my neighbourhood) just recently finished a combat patrol campaign. This was actually quite fun as you can play multiple battles in just a few hours. This makes that you can play a lot of battles, for just one campaign. The only problem was that you had to stick to your list, sure you could exchange a unit if you won enough battles but (almost) nobody did.
I'm not going to explain all the rules but it's fun to play. I thought the GM found the rules somewhere online but I'm not sure.

Alright, alternate lists, just like the thread on the Marine board.

Fire warriors
12 men, devilfish-200pts

Crisis suit
deathrain, targetting array-53pts

Crisis suit
deathrain, targetting array-53 pts

Stealth team
3 men, fusion blaster-92pts

Total-398 pts. This one seems a bit too competitive though, maxed elites and all.

Fire warriors
12 man, devilfish-200pts.

Kroot squad
ten men-70 pts

Piranah
fusion blaster, targetting array-70pts.

Fire warriors
six men-60 pts

Total-400pts.

How about a list like this:

XV8 TwL MP TA
53 points

Fire Warriors X 10
Warfish SMS, TA, MT, DL
220 points

Kroot X 11
77 points

Gun Drones X 4
48 points

398 total

This gives him some mech, some infiltration, and some JSJ. A little bit of everything and a list that can do well against most opponents.

That's a good one, I'll consider it.

Heres a list i brought to a combat patrol tournament and got 2nd with...1st place was a Tau player with a list nearly identical to mine (it was pure coincidence and when we saw each other deploying are armies we nearly laughed our butts off.) I went 4-1 in that tourny and he went 5-0 my only loss was to him =)

Fire Warriors X10-Shas'Ui, bonding knife
Devilfish-SMS, Decoy Launchers, Target Array, Multitracker

Crisis-TL, Misisle Pod,Target Array, Multitracker, Plasma Rifle
Crisis-TL, Missile Pod,Target Array, Multitracker, Plasma Rifle

Thing is, I'm trying to teach them. He knows about J-S-J(and loves it), but he needs to know fish of fury, assault rules, vehicle damage tables, etc. and he needs to be both giving and receiving these rules. I'm trying to give both sides something that can do all this, as you can see from the thread in the Marine board. I'm trying to give both of them a vehicle to use and kill, an anti-tank weapon to do it with, an assault element, and a unit that can use a well known tactic(Fish of fury, Bolter traps). I'm thinking

Fire warriors
12, Devilfish-205pts Vehicle, Well known tactic(Fish of fury)
With either D-pod, Decoy launchers, or Targetting array.

Kroot
10 men-70pts Assault element

Crisis suit
Deathrain, Targetting array-53pts Anti-tank, well known tactic(J-S-J)

Drone squad
6 drones-72pts well known tactic(J-S-J)

400pts.

That should work, or commander scoutfox's. Although his is a little short on drones and a little expensive on the devilfish, considering the marine player could well end up with a missile launcher.
