Default Who is the biggest threat?

I was just wondering who in your opinions are the biggest threat to Tau in the fluff and also on the tabletop.

In fluff? I'd say the Nids, as the Tau seem to be able to cope so far with the other races fluff-wise, and the Necrons seem to have left the Tau alone... Perhaps the Tau souls are too light and fluffy?

Game-wise? Necrons, as those buggers just won't stay dead like decent enemies...lol

Fluff wise? Anyone but the Nids. A splinter fleet attacked Tau space and shadowsuns fleet destroyed it for no losses.

Of course, we all doubt this, as its blatant crap, a shas commanding a fleet, and that kind of record, total fanboy. But sadly it is canon....

I'd say the Imperium.

No other power in the galaxy has the right combination of will and ability to crush the Empire.

Eldar probably could, but can't be bothered.
Dark Eldar just can't.
Orks aren't united enough to.
Chaos is too far away (and isn't really interested)
Tyranids and Necrons both seem to be rampaging in other parts of the galaxy (and Necrons don't seem to fight wars on that scale).

I thought it would be The imperium as well, but looking at some of the fluff in the codex and the like, Tau seem to spank them pretty badly.

I was wondering about on the table top becuase im playing my mates orcs nect week with my Tau. I'm not too sure how i will do, Orcs get an obscene amount of attacks on the charge.

The Damocles Crusade didn't go badly for the Imperium. They didn't win, but they didn't really lose either.

The only engagements the Tau have had against the Imperium thus far are relativley small (even the Damocles Crusade). The fact is, the Imperium is so massive in relation to the Empire that even if the Tau killed in a 5:1 ratio they'd still get pummelled ruthlessly.

The Tau's survivial thus far has depended on the fact that no - one with much influence in the Imperium thinks exterminating them would be worth the effort. This situation is slowly changing over time though, so if the Imperium dosen't do something soon it will find its no longer able to.

I think the tyranids are the biggest threat fluff wise. Becuase they were attacked, and the only reason they survived was because an ork waagh had intercepted a flanking splinter fleet. if it wasnt for that, they would of been utterly exterminated by the tyranid fleets. I think i read this peice of fluff on the UK games workshop site, or in the old codex.

The Imperium pretty much did lose the Damocles Gulf Crusade. Both codexes make it pretty clear that they were stalled at Dal'yth, and the Tau fleet basically allowed them to withdraw. They certainly didn't fight their way clear. They likely could have pushed on with significant reinforcements, but they were not available then and they are not likely to be available again that far out on the Fringe. The Tau would need to be much more of a threat before the Imperium got riled up enough to be a threat in return. They might be able to hold the Tau off from further expansion, but those battles will occur where the Imperium has a much easier time mustering and coordinating their armies.

So I would agree that it is either the Tyranids or the Orks. The Tau are probably still not strong enough to repel a full-scale Waaagh! or a large splinter fleet. Whatever Shadowsun did probably won't work again, in the manner of all engagements with the Great Devourer.

Fluff wise, i'd say Tyranids or Orks as the sheer scale of either's invasion is massivly overwhelming when it starts and takes ages to break it's momentum.

Game-wise, 'Crons are pretty tough due to survivability, but Dark Eldar/Eldar have the manouvrability to cause several immediate problems at once.
