Default Revised Bodyguard w/Escort, weird rules usage: cheese?

Hey all.* My last topic on my HQ is a couple days old now; I have revised it, but this also has a somewhat different theme; I'm not sure if this has been done before (I didn't search, but I haven't seen anything like this in the time I've been a member, so....?).* I will list the HQs and "escort," and then pose my strategem.

HQ 1:
XV8 Shas'el: Fusion Blaster, Plasma Rifle, Targeting Array, H-W Multitracker
Total: 98
Owns most tanks and all infantry.* Can take down AV10 transports from a moderate distance.* Made to jump in close, unlease a hail of AP1/2 firepower, than jump back behind the escort/cover.

HQ 2:
XV8 Shas'el: Fusion Blaster, Plasma Rifle, Targeting Array, H-W Multitracker
Total: 98
Same as above.* Works with the other Shas'el.

Elite 1:
XV25 Shas'ui: Team Leader, Bonding Knife, Drone Controller w/2 Shield Drones
XV25 Shas'ui: Drone Controller w/2 Shield Drones
XV25 Shas'ui: Drone Controller w/2 Shield Drones
Total: 190
Owns GEq's and most light/medium infantry.* Massive number of Shield Drones ensures the unit will stick around for a long time.

Now, here is my strategy.* The Stealth Suits w/Shield Drones jump forward, immediately followed by the HQ's, who have the real guns and IC status.* Because of IC status, HQ's cannot be shot at, as the Stealth Suits w/SD will be closer.* However, Stealth Suits have permanent Night Fighting rules, so enemies must roll Night Fighting to see them; if they fail, they lose their shooting; if they succeed, they shoot the Stealth Suits and work against a plethora of 3+/4+ saves.* They can, however, opt to not shoot at the Stealths at all and shoot at the next closest unit.* This would not, however, be the IC's because of their special rules, so this would mean another unit far away that is hopefully in cover; they will be targeting something even more expendable, and thus not targeting the real firepower coming at them.* When the HQ and Escort get in range, they use JSJ to inflict maximum damage and avoid assault, hopefully using cover to advantage.* Enemy wastes shooting on Stealths after they get close enough, slowly but uselessly wasting fire on the SD's.

Also, is there is a topic that lists most/all the Crisis Configs names?* If not, I am thinking of creating one; I couldn't find one when I searched, and I didn't see one stickied...

What say you?

Yes there is a thread about the configurations and it is stickied, you can find it here.

As for your tactic I think it is cheesy if it works which Im not too sure of, since an opponent can ignore Stealth Suits for targeting purposes. That doesn't specifically mention IC status however I think it would be fairly beardy and unsportsmanlike to pull it.

Timberwolf,

Back in 3rd edition, the TAQ FAQ 2.0 has this entry:

Quote:
Q. Is it possible to hide behind a Stealth team which blocks line of sight by
being in base-to-base contact?

A. Stealth teams never block line of sight to other Tau units. Similarly, an
Independent Character cannot claim to be immune to enemy fire by being within
6” of them or by joining the unit.
In 4th edition, this rule changed slightly as the Ind. characters could not be selected as targets if it was not the closest model to the attacking unit (Page 50 of course).

Then the 4th (2004) edition FAQ 4.0.1 came out for the original Tau codex, stating this:

Quote:
Stealth Suits - The rules for spotting Stealth Suits remain unchanged, but enemy units can always choose to ignore the Stealth team in the Shooting Phase when determining the closest enemy model.
And now, Tau Empire is released and we have the following:

Page 27 of Tau Empire:

Stealth Field Generator,

"The firing unit may, however, choose to ignore models equipped with stealth field generators and fire on a more distant target, and in this case, will not be required to take a Target Priority test if the target is the next closest."

And the new Tau Empire FAQ doesn't address further on the stealths.

-- Rule wise, it's never been possible to use stealths to block LOS or alter the ability to fire at I.C.'s. And I don't think it's changed. So, I would recommend you not try to pull this in a match.

Cheers,

I thought it was cheesy too, but quite frankly, I'm sick of getting owned by Jumping Chaplains of Doom, which I believe are among the cheesiest models in the game, esp. when put with jumping Assault Marines...

Malveaux - thanks for the rules clear-up, I totally forgot about all that. I do recall reading it some time ago (like 6 months or a year or so) but I forgot about it. I will revise my set up again than, thanks for the heads up.

Back to the drawing board, again...

::bump:: Hope no one minds...

Okay, here's my dairy-free config...

HQ 1:
XV8 Shas'el: Fusion Blaster, Plasma Rifle, Targeting Array, H-W Multitracker
Total: 98
Owns most tanks and all infantry. Can take down AV10 transports from a moderate distance. Made to jump in close, unlease a hail of AP1/2 firepower, than jump back behind the escort/cover.

HQ 2:
XV8 Shas'el: Fusion Blaster, Plasma Rifle, Targeting Array, H-W Multitracker
Total: 98
Same as above. Works with the other Shas'el.

Elite 1:
XV8 Shas'ui: T-L Burst Cannons, Drone Controller w/2 Shield Drones, Team Leader, Bonding Knife
XV8 Shas'ui: T-L Burst Cannons, Drone Controller w/2 Shield Drones
XV8 Shas'ui: T-L Burst Cannons, Drone Controller w/1 Gun Drone
Total: 191
Owns GEq's and most light/medium infantry. Massive number of Shield Drones ensures the unit will stick around for a long time.

This config of course works like most drone walls: the HQs sit behind the drones, and pop forward to shoot, then jump back. I didn't want to use a Gun Drone Squadron because they have no invuln saves, and if a Land Speeder or three comes by (which is very likely to happen in games I play) they would get deaded in A turn. I was thinking of swapping the Gun Drone (extra ablative wound) and T-L Burst Cannons on the last Shas'ui for a T-L Missile Pod, but I kinda wanted all the weapons the same. Not sure though...

Thanks for any extra feedback on this.

This is pretty expensive to implement. Besides, it's a lot more cost effective to use a wall of Kroot/Firewarriors/Drones.
