Default Ethereals dying. Firewarriors in fishes.

I have a question about what happens to firewarriors in devilfishes when an Ethereal gets squished, and that is are the rules applied strictly as written? Or do they count as having made the morale check and get the preferred enemy special rule for the rest of the game?

My first instinct is to play as written, and i've checked the GW errata.. So... Anyone?

Units in transports are not effected. So they don't get Preferred Enemy, but they do not have to test, either. I know this has been explicitly stated, but I am having a little trouble tracking down the reference. I thought it was in the rulebook, but it may be in the Adepticon FAQ.

Thats what I thought, GW is just trying to destroy the logic centres in my brain again.

Thanks.

Found it. Yeah, it was the Adepticon FAQ. So it is not quite as clear as it needs to be if you aren't playing in Adepticon's area of influence.

Inspiring Presence only benefits units in LOS. But Price of Failure effects all Tau units on the table as long as they are not Locked or Broken, whether or not they have LOS. One of the stupid little additions GW made that drove Ethereals even further from being useful.

I used to use one all the time before the new codex hit. I'd stick him with a unit of broadsides to give them fearless and Ld10 for target priority. The only difference was that the suits were on a hill, but the ethereal would be placed behind it out of LoS. There were basically 3 or 4 ways to actually kill him, and only 1 of which was easy to pull off (and it was available to only 1 army)

1) Hit them with an indirect pie plate, cover and wound every model in the unit. Easy to stop that from happening by spacing models out. Plus with drones it was even easier.

2) Manoeuver so that you could get LoS. This could be tough depending on the size of the hill. Deep striking was risky due to the proximity of units on the hill and the table edge. Also, units attempting to do this were subject to being shot.

3) Punch through the line. This basically involved getting through a bunch of fire warriors (that of course would be protecting the broadsides) and getting to the ethereal and his unit. Of course if your opponent had managed to get this successful an asault off, the game's probably over anyway.

4) Wolf Scouts. Game over man! Game over!

Well, in 3rd Edition you could hide him under a rock or bury him in a transported unit of Fire Warriors. You didn't need LOS to get the reroll, so it didn't matter where he was. All you had to do was keep him out of trouble. Now you have to keep a balance between protecting him and making sure he is easily visible.
