it all depends, in a Devilfish? no. in a normal squad its harder, the carbs allow you to move and fire 6 weapons, but you waste 6 Rifles by moving, so its a matter of preference in footsloggers but its a bad thing in fishes generally.

My take on it, is that carbines are best left in units that were made for them: pathfinders and gundrones. 4th edition is the edition of the Pulse Rifle. I think pulse rifles should be all you find in firewarrior squads and if you want to pin, to take another unit. But again, this is just preference on my part of Firewarriors efficiency.

...... 6 or none.

you want to be able to use all the facilities of the carb, but as mal said, Drones are better, at +2 points if you want carbs you get them and a jumpack.

i usualy dont like to use carbines because i oftenly play imp guard and tyranids and the extra shots are often more valueble than pinning.

only worth it against low ld armies IMO.

the problem with using it against low Ld armies is that the pulse rifle kills so much more with RF :P, the main low Ld armies are ones w/ a 5+ save; Guard, Eldar, Nids(ish). thus the rifles extra RF shot is very valuable.

Pulse carbines are largely a waste IMO in FW teams. If you could equip the whole unit with them -OR- if they were assault 2 (FWs would slaughter most opponents if that were the case though) then they'd be worth it. Otherwise you're basically being forced to march towards your opponent to get into range while the other half of your troop can't fire. Then when you get within 12" you actually have a lower volume of fire.

I've got sprues full of pulse carbines... they're good for making objective markers and adding some bitz to terrain.
