Default WUSIWUG Army

I'm a fairly new Tau player (having started with friends 'rines, then to chaos, and then 'nids) and I got a bunch of models from my buddy. I decided it'd be better to write up an army since we're having a game tomorrow night. Now, I don't have much and I'm looking for the best way to utilise the resources at hand, so I put together this army in which I aimed to reach as many points as possible so that we could play a larger game.

Headquarters
Crisis Shas'O @ 135 points
-Hard-Wired Multi-Tracker
-Shield Generator
-Plasma Rifle
-Missile Pod

Crisis Shas'O @ 132 points
-Hard-Wired Multi-Tracker
-Shield Generator
-Missile Pod
-Fusion Blaster

Troops
Fire Warrior Team @ 110 points
-Shas'ui, Markerlight
-Bonded
-7 Shas'la

Fire Warrior Team @ 110 points
-Shas'ui, Markerlight
-Bonded
-7 Shas'la

Fire Warrior Team @ 110 points
-Shas'ui, Markerlight
-Bonded
-7 Shas'la

Kroot Carnivore Squad @ 112 points
-16 Kroot Carnivores

Fast Attack
Pathfinder Team @ 100 points
-3 Rail Rifles
-2 Shas'la
-Bonded

Drone Squadron @ 96 points
-8 Drones

Heavy Support
Broadside Suit @ 153 points
-Shas'vre
-Drone Controller, 2 Shield Drones
-Hard-Wired Multi-Tracker
-Smart Missiles
-Twin-Linked Railgun
-Target Lock

Hammerhead Gunship @ 210 points
-Ion Cannon
-Dual Burst Cannons
-Multi-Tracker
-4 Seeker Missile
-2 Gun Drones
-Target Lock

This all comes up to about 1362 points, all suggestions and critique is welcome.

pathfinders need a fish so they have to go, drop the 'os to 'Els and remove the ML from the FW squads along w/ the Seekers and you come out armound 1000pts.

sounds good to me

A Shas'o is pretty expensive to be using in a 1500 point battle, so 2 in your army is a bit over the top. *The issue isn't that it's too powerful, but that your opponent will waste them and that the points could have been better spent. *Try just using one Shas'el, and no shield generator.... just stick him close to one of your squads, and because he's an independent character, he cannot be targeted.

Don't put markerlights on the fw squads... your pathfinders can do all the markerlighting you need. *Pathfinders need a fish too, its required.
Also be sure to max out each squad to 12 for more efficiency (more models must be killed to make ld test, 7 killed to be below half, etc)
If you're gonna bring kroot, bring 20, not 16
and do you have more tanks? *or broadsides? *on more broadside, or crisis with missile pods/plasma/multi should be added for more tank busting/marine killing/tyrant killing. *A hh with an ion cannon will be much less effective than one with a railgun. *Even against marines, almost 1/3 of the guys under the template will die, and even land raiders fall to the railgun.

Try this list;

Shas'el @ 85
plasma
missile pod
multi tracker

3 crisis shas'ui @195
plasma
missile
multi

3X 12 fw squads @ 390
shas'ui

40 kroot @ 280 (2 squads)

hh @ 170
railgun
burst cannons
multi tracker
target lock
decoy launchers (don't leave home without em)

broadside @ 75
multi tracker

8 drones @ 96

that comes to 1291.

I don't know what models you have, so my suggestion for the day is to bring another hh like the one mentioned, or more broadsides. *That way, you can easily thwart defilers, rhino rushes, and tyranid heavies.

If you don't have another hh, or devilfish, add a stealth team, more crisis, more fw's, whatever you like. *

I purposefully removed your markerlights for 3 reasons;

1; they're expensive and kinda risky in this small of a battle
2; the armies your facing don't have many things that a seeker missile is good against
3; they take some practice and finesse to use, and seeing as to how you said you were new, try to get a feeling for the army before using them.

Hey, hope you do well, and that this advice comes in handy.

Okay, I haven't really had any experience playing with Tau, but I've done "extensive research" in the codex and on the forums, so here's what I think:

1. Downgrade the second Shas'O (w/ the FB) into a Shas'el. I'm assuming by his config that he's got tank-hunting duty, so he'll try to get up close to make the best of his FB. This means that he's more liable to get killed, so downgrading him to a Shas'el will make his loss a little less painful and not take away too much from his effectiveness.

2. Drop the markerlights in your FW teams. W/o a targetlock, the effectiveness of the markers becomes seriously limited, and including a target lock would make the Shas'ui way too expensive. Use the extra points to beef up the teams. (You also have included a Pathfinder team, so if you really need to mark a target, which you probably won't, then you could have ur pathfinders do it.)

3. With the new v4 rules, I'd take a shield generator instead of the drones in your Broadside team. Also, what's the point of the target lock? I'm pretty sure that Broadsides all alone, and that means that the target lock is pointless. I'm also doubting the usefulness of a multi-tracker. Since Broadsides need to remain stationary to be effective (and since they should be used for tankhunter duty), you probably want to put em way in the back so that they won't get shot/assaulted and you can make the best of their long range railguns.

4. The choice between an Ion Cannon and a Railgun really depends on what army you'll be facing, but if I only had one HH, I'd take a railgun. In accordance with my suggestion to drop the markerlights, I'd also suggest dropping the seekers. IMHO, railguns do a much better job at taking out vehicles/dreads (and since ur shas'ui didn't take a target lock, you'd waste a lot of pulse fire against the target just to mark it). I'd also drop the gun drones, since I don't like to put too many points into one vehicle (and the extra 2 shots really isn't worth it).

Overall, I think you got caught in the trap of beefing up ur squads w/ way too many upgrades (although I must admit, Tau have some pretty cool options). If you decide to take out the ones I suggested above, spend the extra points filling out ur FW and Kroot squads. Instead of taking a second HQ choice to do tank-hunter duty, you may also consider just taking a regular Crisis suit, as this will make him even more expendable.

You should know ahead of time, if your just trying to max out on points your gonna be at a disadvantage, but if thats whay you want to do I wont stand in your way, so here are my suggestions.

Break up the drone squad into two 4-man teams who will escort you Shas'O's.
On the Shas'O's get hardwired multi-trackers, consider droping the shild generators for a fusion blaster ;D.
Put hardwired target locks on you FWs, that will add a few more pts, and the'll be more usefull.
How many broadsides are you using? 1 or 2? In anycase i believe you can only have 1 hardwired system in the group.
On the HH, get a railgun, and the SMS, and tac on a decoy launcher (or the upgrade that lets you roll immobilized results).

whatever you do do no split the drones (sorry orange) they then have Ld4 and any casualty or forced test will send them running.

Some suggestions can be easily be shuinted considering that army uses everything that I have, there is no extra units to throw in to make changes... sadly. ..

Uggh. As Dizzy said, that makes no sense: One downed drone and their LD goes down the toilet and they are almost guaranteed to run away. That's not good advice.

go with my suggestions, 1000pt games are good enough until you can buy enough to get up to 1500.
