Depends, the Tau win not with straightforward tactics, but with tricks and subtlety. I don't think they'd be good for a starting army though, of course that could just be me. But I think marines are the easiest to start with.

Tau was the first army I really played a lot, and while, in all honesty, it's certainly not the easiest army to pick up, it's not the hardest either.

However, it IS a great army to assemble and paint as a newcomer to the hobby. No worrying about how to fit the damn land speeder together since the sprue is jacked, and the clean lines are great for painting.

Tau are more difficult to learn than most armies , but someone totally new to the 40k may do OK because they have not been "tainted" by tactics for other armies.

Just tell them to be patient the Tau take time to master.

In all honesty I would say neither Tau or Eldar are "beginner" armies. The Tau require quite a bit more strategy to work effectively and the Eldar are much less durable than marines except for their armor.

Space Marines are the only true beginner army IMO.

I'm finding the tau are definately a lot more difficult to play than i would have expected.

i'm finding a lot of holes in my list, tactics and strategy. I have around 2000 points worth. But i was just trying to get a sizable army so i stood a chance as most of the guys i play with don't like playing anything under a 1500 point game. And now that i have the basics i'm working on patching up the holes.

They aren't the most forgiving army to begin with but its definately worth it to see the look on your opponents face when you deploy 2 or 3 hammerheads that can hit and kill anything on the board almost instantly :P

I'm a fairly new 40k player and I began with and continue to play tau. I basically chose tau to be different from my other newb buddy, who chose marines.

So apparently I hear that tau is like, the next most popular army after the marines, and, although I've still got lots to learn still, I've managed to become pretty comfortable playing them in the short time I have. So I guess they probably do have something that makes them good to start with? Then again, I have had a lot of good help along the way (eg: you folks of TO).

Tau are probaly in the mid-low range of popularity but pulling that info from here is a little biased. They are definantly not a noob friendly army, i would probaly put it in the top 4 or so hardest army to get right (excluding variant lists *cough* kroot mercs *cough*) It isnt forgiving. It is a great army to learn 40k with though. It was my first and the one i do the best. It teaches you haw to fully utilize the movement phase and shooting phase. Tau is all about applying firepower on pin pointed units and denying the oppertunity to do damage back. You have to be super careful on your angles, LOS, shooting order, and assault denial to play them effectively. If you worried about easyness to play i wouldnt recommend but if you want an army that takes time (rewarding time) to master and can teach you loads about the game then it is great.

GW actually considers the Marines an ideal starter army (As I once worked for them), as they're quite forgiving when you're first learning the mechanics of the game. Look what army has come with the last few editions of 40k... Marines :P.
