Default Devilfish beyond FoF

I own two Devilfish, and while FoF has earned its merits, what other use for them is there? Apart from the obligatory transport choice with pathfinders, what else can a flying brick with two Gun Drones do to justify 80 points?

turn it into a Warfish.
Runs ~120 pts, SMS, Targeting Array, Multi-tracker, Decoy Launchers.

It serves as a light tank in all regards, and can 'snipe' safely with the SMS from behind cover.
There's a whole range of things you can do, it's just that 'stock' config isn't really that great.

Uh, I don't know, use it as a TRANSPORT?

Move your firewarriors or kroot around, get them into firing positions, and stuff.

Jeez, think it would be obvious.

I beg to differ; a devilfish doesn't need any upgrades to be useful, as transports go it has a fairly good mix of armour, mobility and fire power (land raiders don't count :P). Free squads of 2 gun drones with their mobility and pinning can really be annoying as they can effectively tie up entire units for a turn or more and cause target priority checks to protect your more expensive units.
Also, in my experience all my opponents are dead scared of all tau tanks (and rightly so!) even devilfish. I run all 3 of mine on one flank to distract from my main battle line.

well, that was rude. Also, just for the record 'fish can't transport kroot (mores the pity).

I thought it would be obvious, you know, like, they're called Transports. Didn't know 'bout Kroot, my point stands though.

Sure, it's got a nice balance, but a couple of cheap upgrades (Multi-tracker, Decoy Launcher) can make it both more survivable and more useful overall. I'm not saying spend a boatload of points on 'Fish like I do, but a few properly chosen upgrades can make a huge difference over a standard 'Fish without them.

I have to agree that it's a very nice transport. Just under the Wave Serpent in terms of usefulness, but a hell of a lot cheaper. It's also well clear of the next best transport, if can remember which one that actually is ;D
And, as you said, Land Raiders don't count.

Really? I thought I was that only one to use that tactic.

Anyway, I agree with Ravager Zero. I always kit my fishies out to be Warfish.

Slap a disruption pod on it. Move it up mid field and land it. Move up crisis suits who use its nice big bulk to hide behind while they launch JSJ attacks. Great use for an empty pathfinder fish.

Fish bashing thread? ;D

In anyway IMO fish has several uses and configs->

Dedicated transport- > Decoys & M-tracker
Cheapest variation EVER, These to upgrades are must for them in almost any situation...
And if u lose it, its not that many points to cry about. Has a equal survivability when compared to other fish configs so it can be used in low point games as well as 1500+

FoF -> Decoys, M-tracker & Fletcher.
Cheap and has everything to keep the FW safe. Drones will help to. Fletcher can be a nice boot in ur opponent face when he decided to assault it...

Warfish -> SMS, M-Tracker, Decoys, TA (possibly fletcher)
Expensive but has 7 str 5 shots that can be ALWAYS fired, and 4 of them don't need line of sight...
Can also be used as FoF, but IMO its too expensive... You can still transport people in it but not with a FoF style... U can just put them in cover or things like that. For big games, its obviously will also fulfill FoF too...

Well thats my small Opinion...

P.S. Falstead -> Neat trick u got there, But 90 points for a road block... well I don't know... But still its very original and your opponent will not see it coming

Walk Tall everyone!!!!!

Note: Falstead said he uses his mandatory Pathfinder Devilfish so it's a 90 points he already paid inorder to get his Markerlights.

Red_Dog answers the question well.
Transport (of course)
FoF (check)
Warfish (check)
Road Block (as Falstead said)

the other option is

Skimmer Wall-
Flechette Discharger on all tanks and use them as (well) a WALL to keep assaulting hordes like Orks and 'Nids at bay.
