Default I want to play Tau....But I don't like Tau.

Hello

I've always had a love of Tau, especially the Battlesuits. (Just read my Sig. ) and I have thought about starting a Tau army since I first got the book, but every time I think about starting a tau army I get diswaydid by the Tau themselves. It just seems to me that Tau lack individuality, and to an extent, emotion. This really annoys me and is the main factor in dissuading me from starting tau. So I guess my guestion is, do Tau really lack individuality and, to a lesser extent, extreme emotion?

They dont lack either of those things, their race joined up with the Ethereals leading them out of respect for the Ethereals getting all the different sub-races of the Tau to stop killing each other. The Tau also don't lack individuality either, they simply have a collective desire to spread their philosophy. A good example would be the ideal of world peace among people in real life, except the Tau are crazy enough to work together to do so. Tau are capable of extreme emotion, simply the Ethereals have a calming effect on other Tau so that they do not kill each other. The Tau of different septs also have widely different personalities and have cultural stereotypes associated with each of them.
The loss of ethereals in the battlefield has led Tau armies into battle frenzies where much larger forces have perished against them.

I think in the back of the third edition codex, it describes a bunch of the scepts and how their different. I think the 4th has it too, but different ones than the third.

Sounds to me like you should play the Farsight Enclaves.

Individuality? Farsight left the Tau empire and started out on his own. He's defiantly an indavidual.

Emotion? Farsight is aggressive, and embittered by long periods of warfare. (And, depending on what you belive, tainted by chaos/necrons/other)

Crisis suits? Farsight's got those in spades. The ability to field 8 crisis suits as a single HQ choice gives him what some people like to call the "Seven Samurai" list. Crisis suits also count as 1+, so you'd have a lot of modeling options, as well as tremendous firepower.

Plus, who doesn't love having a Giant sword on a Crisis Suit?

Tau have quite a wide range of personalities and character quirks. Just read any of the Black Library stuff that deals with them. They are somewhat naive, but they are certainly neither emotionless, nor do they lack individuality.

I have thought about that. I have also thought about a cadre that is just "Independent". I really like the idea of an Independent Cadre. Farsight is cool, but he's just not my cup of tea.

There's a guy who devoted his whole army and fluff (a substantial amount) to his cadre. The story behind it is roughly that they move through the stars, scavenging as they can trying to find their way back home.

And, each model has only as much character as you give it. The guy with the banner is much more interesting than the one with the standard gun. Endeavor to make them interesting!

This is my basic premise. Imagine a small battle fleet sent out on a mission of exploration of the human empire. Once you get far enough away from any friendly help, you're independant if you like it or not. It's not like the imperium, where someone could warp in to save you in the nick of time, no, you're really alone out there.

I really need to write up the fluff. Ive got enough material for perhaps half a novel.

They're as individual as you want them to be. Write your own fluff, give each model some personality, and you'll like 'em.

Plus I'm the only guy who plays Tau at our store :P. I've never had to fight another tau army.

so what your saying is that oven cleaner can remove paint from plastic models? and after that, you take a toothbrush to your plastic model, and the paint just comes off?

Hmm. OK. my little brother has a tau army and I have bin helping him with it so I am very familiar with their rules and models. I will have to get some of my other projects finished first and get some fluff down for them but it looks like I may start playing Tau.

Thanks.
